Most of IWC's watches are based upon highly modified ETA movements except for a few of their high end models. While Rolex uses in-house movement for all their range.
I would say the Aquatimer 2000m with yellow bezel is my favorite IWC watch. |

That's actually incorrect. Vast majority of their models have gone in-house since ETA was acquired by Swatch.

IWC has a history of using ETA movements and making cases that are, imo, overpriced. Yes, now that Swatch has announced it will cut the umbilical cord, IWC has taken many efforts to make in-house movements. Craft by coercion is not my idea of craft.
I'd take a Portuguese, but otherwise, I kinda agree with WatchSnob about the brand. Plus the ones I've seen have quite noisy movements. They sold out to the point Rolex never did. Rolex is the better brand if you have to ask me about a "vs." situation. The fact that some people will pay outrageous prices for IWC doesn't mean they're worth it... rather more likely just proof of a truism once espoused by PT Barnum. |

Good morning, Greg. As you know, I love noisy movements and overpriced cases.

This whole "must be in-house movement" idea is silly. I guess all those 16520s with Zenith movements are rubbish, ETA equipped Tudors are crap, and Panerais with Rolex movements are valueless? Come on, everyone knows better. I say judge the merits of the movement as well as its integration into the design.
