Hi folks,
I'm looking to learn more about Tiffany dial Rolexes. Anyone know any good references apart from the one below? http://rolex.watchprosite.com/show-f...ti-478316/s-0/ Thanks! Greg p.s. if you have one please post a photo!

Hey Greg,
Saw one for sale on the forum you can check out. Also seen on the Vintage forum as well the same watch. Kind of pricey, but if you have the cash go for it! Good luck, Tom |

Greg, I think the article sums up the Tiffany-Rolex story fairly well. The only thing he left out was at some point in time, there was a disagreement between the two and Tiffany no longer sells Rolex.

I had a tiffany 1655 orange hand for all of 24 hours. Picked it out and negotiated a deal from a dealer at the HK coin show and vintage watch fair held twice a year at the holiday inn basement. Few things stood out - bubble second hand for an early 3 mil serial that should have a straight hand; crown guards were of the later squarer shape instead of the pinched ones on the straight handers; and non-cosc papers marked only with tiffany & co. stamp with typed serial at the top. Should also mention that overall the watch was in exceptional condition and was the entire full set with tiffany box, booklets etc.
Fast forward a few hours post-purchase and a friend back home mentioned the papers seemed dubious - non-cosc for a cosc watch, no name/date, typed serial instead of double punched (booklet was blank). Brought the watch to Michael Young to have both the papers and the watch checked under microscope and UV - turns out the edge of the dial between 6 and 7 o'clock had been refinished, not a big deal. Paper also seemed 'genuine', creases, stains, yellowed paper et al. Consulted his partner at the office too who pointed out the bubble second hand that was 'wrong' for the frog foot coronet dial, said it looked 'gorgeous' but admitted he would not buy it simply because it was not 100% original. Went back to the fair the next day, met Mr James Dowling and asked for his opinion - he looked at the papers in detail under a loupe and concluded they were fake. Whooped out a period correct set of papers from his showcase and pointed out the differences in the dot matrix printing. He also pointed out that Tiffany & Co. stamp on the papers itself had been rubbed out and re-stamped under 'date' instead of 'dealer name'. Gave props for it being one of the 'better faked papers' and mentioned how they seem to have perfected the aged/creased look convincingly. Bottom line - unless u have provenance, full set and can verify with Tiffany & Co. and/or Rolex Geneva (emailed Tiffany offices and was shunned on providing help for a Rolex sold over 30 years ago), it is going to be difficult to sell a Tiffany Rolex for much more than an identical watch without the co-branding. I returned the watch at the fair to the same dealer I had bought it from for a 100% refund no questions asked. Till this day I still wonder if I had passed on a true Tiffany 1655 (the Tiffany print was without doubt genuine and exactly matched the prints in the watchprosite link provided). Guess I will never know for certain…. |

Matching Datejusts for the wife and I - hers is the Tiffany dial. Purchased from a well respected vintage dealer at the same time. Said it was purchased from Tiffany from the original owner and that's who he bought it from....but with no paperwork understood that it's tough to charge a premium for. Still looks great....and my wife LOVES it.
