Tudor Monte Carlo on tropicalwatch

I couldn’t help noticing the asking price on this Monte Carlo on Jacek’s site: https://tropicalwatch.com/watches/12qg

I know these are becoming more and more popular and this is an unusual variant, but $94,000? Am I missing something?

From the description: “The extremely rare black dial is excellent and shows little if any wear. The black portion of the dial is aging with an even and consistent speckling pattern. The lume has aged to a warm creamy hue and the hands have aged slightly lighter than the dial.”

Google tells me one of these sold at auction for over $100k in 2017.

I know it is absolutely 100%, but the non black portion above the shield bugs me.

You mean the light reflection at the top?

I think he means the white bit that extends above the shield. It sort of looks like a mistake.

It appears to be a light reflection to me. When I did an internet image search for the Tudor 7031, all the dials had the white area above the Tudor shield. I'm not sure what is causing it, either a reflection or part of the shield color.

A Google image search indicates that all the Montecarlos with the homeplate markers had that white bit above the shield at 12 o'clock. It's actually on the dial rather than being a reflection/artifact. I'd never noticed it before.

These ones with the black dial are rare AF, hence the price. It's the Tudor version of a mega-grail Paul Newman, Comex, Milsub, or whatever comparison you want to make.

Amazing that black rather than grey adds 60 grand to the price!

Thanks. That’s what I was curious about. I find it interesting that there’s a market for them that will support those numbers. Newman, Comex, Milsub have a deep history that resonates with people and it makes sense that there’s a lot of people who want a part of that history. But what about these? Other than the funky design, what makes them THAT desirable?

Wow, interesting I hadn't noticed this before. After browsing other examples it seems like it is a home plate thing. It doesn't appear like light reflection to me, just a large white area with an applied logo on it.

Well, it's all just perception, isn't it? An actor wore one. A diver wore one. Somebody else wore one. It's still just a watch.

In this case, once you're done with vintage Rolex, lots of people go for the subtleties of vintage Tudor. And this is the absolute peak of Tudor for vintage collectors. It's the exit watch that renders the rest of the collection redundant.

Not sure where you go after that...

Looks like quite the premium to pay for one of these home plates. I remember a post a few years ago that showed the legit dials had a nice texture to them, almost ridged (the black area).

I don’t if I would value this one so astronomically. I think I rather own like 9 Tudor subs instead of the one black home plate. But it is unusual

This is the the piece to complete your Monte Carlo collection! Unbelievably rare and I wouldn’t be surprised if the eventual purchaser has the others to complete the homeplate collection.
