Chrono vs Chrono 5960G vs 5172G

As usual I am confused why my favorites never seem to be popular.

The 5960 takes a chronograph plus annual calendar is an everyday wearable style that seems to be a bit underrated and available at a nice discount.

To me the 5172 occupies THE classic chrono in the line up but it also seems to be going more casual with the strap and hands. It holds it price better (which is a downside if you are a used buyer) and seems to be more in demand.

Curious if there are any strong opinions out there on either of these.

Chrono vs Chrono 5960G vs 5172G

I did try the 5172G as it was on my purchase shortlist along with the 5960P but it just didn’t sit comfortably on my wrist where the 5960 sat perfectly. So I chose the 5960 because of that, and that it’s also a flyback as well as being an automatic. It’s also an extremely daily wearable being that it looks less obviously like a PP and I do wear it most days.

Values are less important to me as I don’t buy for investment or resale but because it’s a watch I want to wear and enjoy. But if I could have afforded the 5270 it would be a different story!!

I put a bespoke red strap on it for CNY (I live in Hong Kong) as I work in a watch accessory shop.

Just realised you are talking about the 5960G - out of those two I would choose the 5170 as the dial and hands of the 5960G are less well executed design wise in my opinion.

There are some people who like annual calendars and there are a lot of people who like chronographs but the intersection of people who want both on one watch is rather small and the number of people who are willing to pay full retail for that specific combination is even smaller.

If you want a perpetual calendar the 5320 is it.

If you want a chronograph the partner 5172 is it.

They are brother and sister now the cases match.

The 5960A is my somewhat daily watch and I wouldn’t trade it for a Patek manual chrono. I have Patek’s in-house automatic chronograph plus Patek’s signature modern complication, the annual calendar, in a 40mm steel case. The power reserve comes in handy. The bracelet is very comfortable. It has everything.

That's my plan. Matching syringe hands and stepped case

Cant really go wrong with either but I would lead towards the 5960g as an everyday watch over the 5172g.

The price between the two pieces makes it quite attractive too.

the 5172 is the decendent of the family of patek manual wound chronographs (130, 1463, 5070 and 5170).
and it is currently the only manual wound chrono in current patek offering.
so if you are after a legendary ref then that is the one currenlty in the catalouge.
the 5960 is a great watch too, but not sure it is the decendent of an old model

The 5960 is totally it’s own model although it’s now discontinued. Of course it differs from all the other chronographs in that it’s the first fully in house movement rather than being based on the veritable Lemania 2310, and is also the first automatic chronograph. It defies convention with its dial layout due to the fact that the vertical clutch means the chronograph can run continuously without loss of power reserve, accuracy or adverse wear and negated the need for additional subdials.

Thanks - I like to be a little less conventional with my straps choices.

thanks for the great info,
one clarification tho is that the first in-house PP chronograph is the 5170 (manual wound)

I stand corrected - indeed yes. First automatic chronograph, not forgetting the additional complications.
