First Rolex in the Family, 1979 18078

My wife and I were in at our local AD, a great family owned establishment, and when looking at an anniversary gift for my wife her eye caught this 1979 Rolex Day Date, ref 18078. She's not typically a watch person, but the watch so fit with her style that we ended up picking it up. She couldn't be happier, it fits her perfectly.

Ironically, as I languish on the SS sports-watch list (Sub Date, Batman), she got the first Rolex in the family! Maybe this will help my cause.

Nice!

Maybe the ghost of Hans Wilsdorf is telling you to go vintage, too…

Cheers, everyone! I appreciate it. She was especially drawn to the bark texture, and satin gold finish. Not sure I could pull it off, but perfect on her!

Now there are two of us in the house with a watch habit. Financial advisor on line 2.

That's beautiful. Exceptionally stylish to go with a bark finish on your first Rolex. #GangsterWife

Congratulations!

Bark DDs are very special, and it looks great on her. (It should also help your cause.)

Has she admired it out in the sunlight? Bark is at its best there.

These cousins say hello!

Beautiful example of a not so common reference. As others stated - it looks just about perfect on her. Well done.

Almost flawless, told her this was a great example of a quality vintage Rolex and how their owners treat them.

Had never heard of the bark finish, definitely a unique touch. Beautiful watches!

I think she's still afraid to wear it outside, baby steps. Our anniversary is this weekend, so it's expected there will be a maiden voyage for our dinner date.

Maybe @GangsterWife would risk approaching a sunny window?

There’s a good thread of all the bark models HERE, from (our esteemed TRF in-house archivist) @powerfunk.

Love the bark day dates so much character and you rarely see them in the wild.

You picked up an absolute gem without even knowing what it is. Sometimes the stars just align.

Hope she appreciates exactly what she has. It's not just any old gold watch...

Exactly what I told my wife - we wandered over to the empty new Rolex case and I told her this was a common site worldwide, much to her surprise. Made our way over to the pre-owned section and looked at a 1970's Sub Date, great example for how well they hold up and retain value. She eyed that 18078, tried it on, and it just worked. I told her exactly as you said, "sometimes the stars align". Not going to lie, establishing a stronger purchase history with my AD could have also been in the back of my mind.

She's still over the moon about it. Ever see someone wear a Rolex in their PJ's? I have.
