Norton DOC Malbec. A very good, easy Malbec. Classic flavors and dark color with soft tannins.

Perfect summer choice!
As you and this group know,Duckhorn has a great reputation for their Merlot.
I truly enjoy their other label. They make a very good Red Zin!

2011 Qupé Maxtap Cuvee- Red Blend

Was more like a Pinot to me...

Tasting Notes

This is a wine that works well with foods that would normally be served with a rich red. With its soft tannins, plump fruit and spices this wine works well by itself as well. The aromas and flavors show nice berry fruit and dried cherry with hints of tobacco and wild herbs. This wine is not meant to take up cellar space but if you are so inclined should continue to age nicely for 5-8 years.

Wine Specs

Vintage: 2011
Varietal: Blend
Appellation: Central Coast
Alcohol %: 13.5
Wine Enthusiast: 87
Wine Advocate: 88

G8RDPM - 100% agree with you on Duckhorn. We love it!

Paralelo makes its Ensamble wine (Mexico) from two different vineyards, one on a hill and the second on flat surface. Colina and Arenal are born. Even with the same grapes, flavor changes a LOT! Here, a beautiful Colina '09 (Merlot, Cab, Petit Sirah, Barbera, Zinfandel) provides a robust, dark berry wine with medium tanins. A true beauty.

Ghost Pines Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

I totally recommend this wine! Very good price point for the quality of a 90 points wine. GREAT Rich blend of Sonoma/Napa a little lighter for a Cabernet... We picked up dark fruit, toast and oak, vanilla notes...

Winemaker's Notes

Ghost Pines Cabernet Sauvignon has intensely ripe fruit flavors imparted from high elevation vineyards in Lake County. Cabernet grapes from Sonoma and Napa add juicy red and black fruit flavors along with a disciplined structural foundation. The blend of these regions creates aromas and flavors of dark fruit jam and sweet nuts that liken the taste of this wine to oatmeal cookies straight out of the oven.

Tried Heavyweight tonight. No frills, very smooth tanins and lack of Cabernet power.

Having dinner guests tonight and pulled out a few bottles. We normally start with a Champaign and or white then work into reds. We will likely go deeper into the wine frig! Cheers!

PS- if you like buttery oaky... Acacia Barrel Select is a nice one!

First bottle is very nice, beautiful tannins and a well balanced array of dark berry aromas. Bought a second bottle to try in a more relaxed environment as first was opened during a barbecue where yours truly was cooking. Looking forward to bottle #2 great recommendation

Icon7 Simply...The Wine Thread

Over the course of the evening and dinner we enjoyed a few bottles of wine last night.

Looser of the night was Franciscan Estate Merlot 2012. It was sour and not enjoyable. (possibly we had a bad bottle)

The Winner of the evening was Sparrow Hawk 2012 Reserve Red Wine Napa County! Retails for $35 but picked it up at Costco for $16. HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED! http://www.sparrowhawkwinery.com/wines.html

Both Chardonnays are our favorites. If you like buttery and oaky you will love these!

2012 Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was decanted for an hour and served with Filet Minion & mushrooms, grilled asparagus and twice baked potatoes. The paring was excellent, Always a good bottle! http://www.beringer.com/2012-Beringe...Knights-Valley Tasing Notes: Has aromas of dark blue fruits and spices, cassis, sweet licorice and a juicy core of fruit are balanced by nice acidity and a silky, lingering finish.

Great reminder on the Knights Valley Cab. It's been many years since I've had one, but it use to be a staple in out house. I need to grab some of the 2012 - a great Napa Cab vintage overall.

Nice! I have 9 bottles of the 2012 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Estate Vineyards Cab coming my way in Sept. I'm torn with trying one ASAP vs waiting at least 5 years. Since I have 9, I'm sure I'll open one up as soon as they come in just to get a hint of what's to come.

Icon7 2012 Napa Valley Merlot ~ V. Sattui Winery

Enjoyable ~ Recommended!

Very deep ruby/purple color in the glass, and sweet, red berry fruit aromas explode in the nose. The forward red cherry fruit flavors on the entry and overtones of red raspberry and currants in the mouth give the wine multiple layers of complexity. The oak and tannins lift the palate and give length to the “super rich”, concentrated fruit impression. It is elegant, with a supple texture on the finish that provides lingering fruit and a delicious balance to the wine. Enjoy now with all manner of rich meat dishes.

The fruit and tannic balance is mind numbingly sublime though not resolved, its so freaking age worthy I don't think 10 years is enough... I need a time machine for this one!!!

Enjoyed this medium priced ($15) Aussie (McLaren Vale Cab Sav., Shiraz , Merlot) whilst cooking the evening meal. I cellared this 2008 which has developed into a lovely mature wine that is full of red currents and plums and savoury notes. Soft and smooth on the palate with a lovely bouquet that features spice and cedar. A real joy to drink a wine this good that only cost a pittance.

Wine Spectator

A gorgeous effort, delivering a wealth of rich, dense dark berry,
chocolate, cedary oak, dried herb and black licorice flavors. Despite
the size and strong personality, this is graceful and firm, with
tender tannins. Drink now through 2028. From California.-J.L.
Score: 96. —James Laube, July 22, 2015.

2012 Reserve Cabernet - Return of the Big Block. Running on high octane aromas and built on an iron block with deep reserves of black fruit. Coming off idle the nose slowly explodes with sappy dark and rustic berries, clove, cedar and sweet oak spices. Forged, ripe fruit pistons pump out the power for miles until finally finishing with an impressive band of ported and polished tannins. Parker 95
I agree
