Hope you have a nice weekend too. Edit: One more thing to add and I'll have said my piece on the issue: If you wouldn't say something to someone's face in the real world, it's probably best not to say it to someone over the internet. I really doubt you'd say to someone proudly showing you their red sub that "red subs are for newbies." A good rule of thumb. |

The fact that it is the above is why I don’t think prices are on the up. New people moving in to the hobby will not likely spend 50k+ on their first big purchases in the future. Or at least that is what I think. Prices have reached a level where theres just not much more room up. I’m not overly optimistic over many prices today as I think a lot of standard models are extremely overvalued. Including watches I own myself. And just to be clear; I think vintage subs are pretty much great. Red subs included. I am having a great weekend. Thanks

1680 Red Pricing
I bought my first vintage Rolex 10 years ago(2008/2009) it was a 16660 gloss dial and cost me $3800
Comparatively white 1680’s were $5K and Red subs were $10K. At the time my watch dealer thought prices were crazy and that 10K for a Red Submariner was too much. ——- One year ago I finally was in the position to purchase my first Red 1680 it cost me $16K euro and after fitting it with a period correct bezel it totaled out about $20K usd. As the original owner of a Mark IV 1680 reference, the purchase date was early 1971
in Hong Kong-on leave from a combat tour in Vietnam. I had missed a 5513 in PACEX-Exchange in Quang Tri by one day. Prices have risen on these original tool watches. Supply and vintage watch demand are factors. As a military USA-SF diver, I will always be a tool watch owner, and will strive to resist the current trend. Its enjoyable to be in a different time warp-or as Redford said:" It feels good to break a rule now and then.." A new 5513 Submariner was selling then for $90.00(USD)-no tax. I will refrain from quoting the 1680 cost, but it was not that far from the 5513. Relative watch value. Since I have a couple more comparative 40mm Submariners, I will refer you to an excellent enjoyable article by Paul Altieri of Bob's Watches: "Last of the Best". It tends to put the Rolex Submariner in perspective-while leaving a warm sense of owner satisfaction concerning the brand's designers. All without the dismal backdrop of modern "market share". I still look for the 1950's-60's vintage Rolex Submariner ads. Some of us will always pressure test while wearing tanks....... |
