thoughts on this vintage datejust?

Years ago I inherited my grandfather's two-tone silver dial datejust.
It was stolen or misplaced about 12 years ago. Since then I've purchased only modern watches, at modern sizes, and going back to the 36 seems small. I have tried some on recently and have gotten more used to the way it looks.

Came across this example, and I love the color combo. I am no longer a fan of two-tone, but I love the gold hands and indices with the stainless or white gold case and bracelet. The dial, silver, has a gold hue reminiscent of my grandfather's.

Question for you...those with vintage experience. Thoughts on the condition and price?

I do, too... :-)
I don't need it...so the question becomes do I bother.

Price a fair one? Should I negotiate?

I think I do want it...
but I only buy if the price is right. What would you pay for it (or make an offer for it)?

The price isn't bad for a very nice 16XXX and that is a very nice looking watch. I would pass over the corrosion in the gasket channel.

This is what you want the gasket channel to look like...

I did notice that wasn't sure if it was typical for the era

There is no point in buying a rusty watch, too many nice ones out there. Better to get a corrosion free one and find the right dial and hands if necessary. Having said that, if you're in luuuuuv with that one the channel can be rewelded at some point.

Nice-looking DJ, but I would make sure that's the way the watch looked originally, if that's important to you.

I've been in vintage DJ-obsession mode a couple of times over the years, and in my research I can't remember ever seeing a stainless DJ with gold hands and gold hour markers like that. That combo would usually be on a two-tone version, I think, but I could be wrong. Worth confirming.

Good luck.

The dial and hands are wrong for an all stainless model. It should be a 2-tone with that combination.

Service hands IMO. And yes, it has been converted from a TT, by replacing bezel, crown, and bracelet. End-links mismatched (one aftermarket, probably). Pimped-up watch for sure.

A few people have said they thought the combination was rare but something that was an option. I happen to really like these hands and indices with the stainless steel look. It give it some pop without the bling of the two tone.

The thing that turns me off, after your comments, is the corrosion in the channel.
Thanks for all of our feedback. I'll be passing.

It really is a nice looking DJ. But I agree the hands and indices just don't seem right for the watch. The lume on the hands and indices looks like new instead of being 40 years old. The fact that it's a real gorgeous watch certainly makes it desirable, but the price is too high. Tough decision to make, I'm sure. Good luck, and if you do buy, wear it in good health.
