Seiko in Kyoto
I was in Kyoto this week, and dropped into the local Bic Camera to what was on display, and grab a few quick iPhone snaps of the Seiko and Grand Seiko cases. Didn't buy anything but came away with a handful of brochures and catalogs...

That's a lot of watches. I see my PADI in the center at the top pic. Nice selection.

I took along my Lord Marvel with its suitably wab-sabi dial for the this trip (fourth time in Kyoto I think), which began with a trip to 7-Eleven to stock up on Japanese whiskey to keep us warm, and also included a little sightseeing as usual.

Thanks. I actually preferred The Chita, which surprised me a little, with it being a grain. Very creamy and moreish. I was planning to pick up a couple of litres at the airport, but Japanese whisky stock at duty free was really poor, even worse than Hong Kong. I should have picked up more in town, where both are freely available even in convenience stores. I ended up getting Monkey Shoulder in HK on the way back in.

Love this, great times thanks for sharing. Suntory Whisky is always difficult to come by these days in Japan. Can't wait to check out more Grand Seikos next time I'm in town also.

Yeah, thanks, it was fun. I was surprised to see quite a bit of mid-range Suntory and Nikka on liquor store shelves. I even took some pics for posterity! Kind of kicking myself for not buying a couple of Chita when I had the chance.

Very nice. Yeah I enjoyed Chita since all the usual suspects were in such short supply (Yamazaki, Hakushu, even select Hibiki blended) last time I was there. That Nikka straight from the Barrel is pretty darn good imo at the price point. Good times always in Japan. Thanks for sharing the pics and your adventures in Japan, I even miss all the cheap Nikka black for nice highballs.

In addition to beautiful, Japan is also one of the safest places we ever been. The food is just amazing and people are respectful. And that is the only place where my wife was ok to use public bathroom, that says something on how clean it is. Looking forward for the time to visit again.

Thanks guys. I'll be supporting my wife at the Nagoya Marathon in early March, so will see what that's like for domestic watches and whisky while she's preparing/recovering

I’ve been wondering something: if you buy JDM Seiko’s from the likes of Chino or Seiya, is this essentially what you’d pay at a brick and mortar store in Japan, or are you likely to pay more or less in-person? (Assuming a non limited edition piece, etc.) And would prices for the same pieces likely be more or less in say, Hong Kong?
Maybe in-person wins out in the event you want to buy multiples? |

I haven't compared places like Bic Camera (a discounting Seiko AD chain in Japan) with online Japanese sellers. Models with JDM and International versions like the Turtle (SKX777/SBDY015) seem to be quite a bit more expensive in Japan, even at the discounted prices. Hong Kong is the cheapest place I have found for International Seikos (e.g. quite a bit cheaper than Thailand), but slightly higher than Japan for Grand Seikos and LE Prospex editions like the SLA019 and 025.

Interesting. Thanks, Adam. I don't really need any other reasons to put Japan on my list of must-travel-destinations, but if by some magic watches were also cheaper there, even than from trusted Japanese online sellers, then I would be happy to note it.

Hi Adam
Yes those roofs are beautifully designed and constructed. As for the whisky I've never had the Chita, but I'm not much of a whisky drinker but I do have a bottle of Hibiki open at the moment which I sadly drink with cola The watches are great I'm surprised my SBDC053 in your first photo only got #3rd place but for me its still #1 (apart from the SLA017) Tonight I will have some Dom Pérignon to celebrate the new year. Happy New Year to you and everyone here!!!
