I'm a fan of the 5196G - was actually looking into getting one for myself but will probably do it a little but down the road as I just picked up the new bluesy.
Aesthetically, the small seconds speaks to me more compared to the 5227G. However, wish that the 5196 had a see through caseback. |

Big vote for the 5036/1g or 5085 ... both great bargains in the secondary market.

VT, considering your sporty use the Naut is the only thing worth considering by PP imho. Did you get a Bvlgari Octo yet?

What’s your budget... mine was not large by Patek standards.
I bought a vintage calatrava. Precious metal Dress watches are what PP are about for me. Not stainless steel sports watches. I bought a vintage 3512. You will get a very food one for circa $7k Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If you were asking about an "Entry Level Patek" 6-7 year ago, people would have said the Aquanaut. Today, the answer would be a Calatrava, if you are strictly speaking about price of entry to the Patek world.
The 5196 is a great traditional Calatrava with a seconds hand on the subdial. If you are coming from the Rolex world, you may not be used to manual wind watches. However the 5196 is a manual wind watch and you will need to wind it every day or two, as compared to a self-wind watch. The 5227 is a "Modern Calatrava" introduced in 2013. It has a larger case and is an automatic. It comes with the officer's caseback which is not often seen in modern Patek watches, but a nice hidden feature. There are some other recently discontinued Calatravas to consider including the 5296 or the 5127. Take your time and visit some Patek ADs and try on a few watches. Also try on some pre-owned Pateks at pre-owned watch stores. Eventually you will know which watch will sing to you. |

jon_jon makes a good point about the 5127, which is a beautiful Patek option as is the 5107.

Not much to look at I'm afraid. I think that's why it's solid...which I actually prefer. The 5196 would be my choice of first Patek... It's classic. It's be hard to choose a metal. I've tried on three, only one I haven't was the platinum. They were perfect on the wrist for my wrist size. |

I too have started looking into adding my first Patek. So many beautiful watches to choose from but the wallet will only allow me to seriously entertain only a few...I'm looking at the 5196 and the 5227. I'm leaning towards the 5196...the dial of the 5227 looks a little empty to me and I find the white/contrasting date window a little disruptive. Love everything else about it though but much prefer the layout of the 5196.

IMO “entry level” is just what’s considered readily available and on the lower price point. I would try on a few, see what you really like and set your target that way. I admired a few pieces, went to see them and quickly realized they weren’t for me but the ones I had not given much interest to (based on pictures) were the ones that I liked. So I happy walked away and realized it was not my time to buy a Patek:)

Cost aside, some models I love: - 5196P - 5205R, 5205G - 5170G-001, 5170P - And if cost is no object: 5970 (any metal, but the R is the highlight for me), 5270P, 5370P, 5131 - Vintage: 1463, 565, 2526 The sport models are all well over list right now and don't really interest me, personally. Enjoy the search! |

Hi Paul,
I understand PP sports has a following on the forum, but I believe the dress pieces are what truly represents the brand's ethos. Patek invented the annual calendar and there are some beautiful references with very attractive prices on the market. I would go with an AC. |

I'd say the nautilus would be the submariner of the club, albeit with more complications available
Annnd a calatrava is the dj of the club Attainability tho is a bigger topic I suppose... As is affordability |

Absolutely the reason I purchased a Calatrava, I wanted to always think of a Datejust when looking at my wrist. Amazing insight and comparison.
