Hulk and Daytona C for 5164 A Aquanaut

I recently let my gold Submariner go and picked up a 5726/1A in white and have now been bitten by the Patek bug

In addition to the 5726, I have a Hulk, Black Daytona C and 16710 Pepsi

I really like the look of the 5164 after seeing many of the pictures on here and actually saw two 'in the wild' in London at the weekend. I think it would make a nice pairing with the Nautilus

So I'm now contemplating letting the Daytona and the Hulk go (plus cash) in order to facilitate me getting one. The Pepsi cannot come into the deal as its from my sons birth year and will go to him when he's older

Do you guys think this would be a good move? How does the 5164 wear in terms of thickness? One of the reasons I chose a 5726 was because the 5711 and 5712 were too thin for me

Thanks in advance

The 5164 is slightly thinner than a 5726 and has a good weight to it (approx 98-100 grams depending on how cut the rubber strap is). The complication of traveltime GMT using the two pushers on the case flank with the hidden skeleton hour hand makes it convenient and doesn't make it feel like the dial is too busy with too many hands like a Rolex GMT when you're not using it. The rubber strap is probably one of the best and could last 5 years + without showing discoloration and wear marks even if you daily it.

Its a personal preference but going to a grey and trying one out is probably your best way of knowing. A daytona is your chrono watch unless you're looking for something else of care for having a chrono in your collection & a daytona being a classic.

I had the 5164 and it is a perfect size for the Aquanaut. Enough thickness for wrist presence but still relatively slim. I would not do the trade since you're giving up too much, IMO. I would do the trade for the 5990 though.

I think it depends on how much cash you have to add, and then personal preference - your style, what situation you wear your watches etc, what complications/features are most useful to you. With the trade you lose a Chrono and a dive watch that’s tough as nails and a timing bezel. I wear my subC and BLNR to do just about anything but I baby my 16710 a bit bc its age and lack of ceramic beZel (Ie I don’t wear to beach/ swimming/ biking).

I would probably give up Hulk and Pepsi for the 5164A, and keep the Daytona C.

I think the daytona is the most overrated watch out there today.

i would flip for sure.

i would keep the LVC and the 16710. add cash. those two, to me, are keepers. I don't have either. But I wish i did.

I would for sure. The rolex pepsi is all the rolex you will need. 5164 smokes the daytona and lvc. I own the 5164 and have owned the LVC 3 times and the daytona 4 times so I say that as a fan of both.

Keep Daytona C, it'll hold far more value and is incredibly durable too.

I wouldn't...
Full disclosure though, I'm not a fan of the Aquanut...

I’d keep one of the ceramic Rolex, one you prefer most, because that’s such an easy daily wearer and can take anything.

I’d get the 64 ALL DAY — it might be my favorite reference — BUT - it would all depend on how much additional cash would need to be added....

You'll need a good chunk of cash to get a brand new 5164. Perhaps a preowned would be better value.

I too have a 5164 and it is a special piece. I think with a GMT function it really is duplication with the Pepsi. I would keep the Daytona and sell the other two.

Are preowned cheaper over there? Here unless they are pretty beat up they are selling for a healthy premium.

I would keep the D500 of those Rolexes, so sell whichever two mean the least to you and get the 64, it is worth it.

Do you have the ability to source a new 5164 at MSRP? If so I'd sell the Hulk and Daytona for a 5164, as I think those watches have peaked and it seems as though black dial Daytonas may already be dropping slightly. I'm not sure I'd pay a premium for a 5164 however, as that watch was selling well back of MSRP on the pre-owned market for a long time and probably will be again at some point. I'm waiting on a new 5164 myself, though I'll be replacing a 5167 so it's a far easier decision than what you've got!

I’ve done something very similar this week: Daytona C, explorer ii and sub date + cash for the 5164a. The Daytona, despite all the hype, never spoke to me... The aquanaut has been my grail watch for quite some time and the second time zone function is a great addition. I’m very happy with the deal!

Go for it! The 5164a is among the most versatile and genuinely wearable watches Patek makes - and it is a great complement to a Nautilus (I have the 5164a and the 5712/1a).

Nope. Like many others, I'm not a fan of the Aquanaut, either. But that should NOT influence your decision. Just like the fact that I have a special attachment to the "Hulk", because I spent 12.5 years attending Michigan State University; and their colors are green and white (GO GREEN!). And THAT should, just as least likely, influence your decision either. See where I'm going with this? This isn't OUR decision, on this board.....it's YOURS. Like Dr. Ruth always said, "If it feels good, do it!". But don't do it just because others tell you to. Go with your gut.

I agree in selling the hulk and you’ll get $13k. Selling the Daytona will get you $20K. That’s already enough to buy the CHF 30.000 5164a. Great watch. I’ve paying attention it due to the community conversations. Like it.

I would go for it. The Daytona C doesn't really do anything for me and it is trading at a high now so should capitalize on it.

5164 is my favorite watch, personally I’d do the trade.
