New lease of life into SKX009

I've been consolidating some of my watches in recent months, with many of my Seikos getting axed from the drawer. I have (well, had) both the SKX007 and SKX009 at one point, but decided to offload the 007 and keep the 009 as it was a J1 variant. Anyway, both watches have not been strapped on for months (if not years) so it really was time to let some go. After all, better off on someone's wrist than in a lonely dark drawer, right?

Recently, I decided to perform a bezel mod on my remaining 009. Purchased an aftermarket bezel, dipped it in bleach, then smeared it across tarmac. After that, it was simply popping off the bezel on the watch (first time seemed difficult for me), then replacing the original Pepsi insert with the new faux vintage one. Also swapped out the stiff Z22 rubber strap in favour of the new silicone strap from my Darth Turtle; made sure to also swap the buckle (the all-black combo doesn't work well on the SKX imho).

Result? I think she'll get some wrist time now.

What is the proper name for this?
It must be something like "artistic damage"
I purchased a motorcycle helmet a few years ago that fresh out the factory looked like it was 10 years old and beat up (still didn't stop someone stealing it off my bike ) anyway I like it a lot!! Very cool and tastefully damaged

It's fake patina, so fauxtina? That's a bleached bezel aka ghost bezel I suppose. That tarmac treatment is simply face down on a tarmac road, then dragged for a a few centimeters! Steve, you reminded me of a Martini wrap on a friend's Cayman GT4... it was a "decayed Martini" wrap! I think its all just instant gratification

Looks great. I love my SKX. But I think I do need to get a new strap for it. The rubber that comes with it is quite uncomfortable.

How long did you soak your pepsi bezel in bleach?

after removing it, everything came off

I did 30 second soaking intervals, immediately rinsing under a tap after. Once you remove it from the bleaching solution, the effect continues on. Shorter intervals allow you to get the exact fade you're looking for.

Great information, love the fade.

You could tape over one colour to stop the fade, say of the blue while getting more fade to the red. That way you could get a custom fade.

Is this a 009 or a 007 with a bezel swap?

How do you go about removing the bezel insert and re-attaching it to the bezel?

Somehow the aged look makes this watch much more alluring to my eye. Perhaps its because it reminds me of the vintage Rolex without the white gold surrounds on the hour markers and the jubilee bracelet.

Steve,
The insert is held on with thin double sided tape. You remove the insert by slipping a thin blade under the insert and moving the blade around making sure not to bend it. You can use a small amount of rubber cement to reapply the insert to the bezel.

In electric guitar circles, this is officially referred to as "relic'd," or "relic-ing."

All major manufacturers and several boutique builders do this now.

Have you put in a sapphire crystal with AR coating in your SKX009?
Is the bevel on the edge of the sapphire crystal wider than factory bevel?
Does the 009 have a blue dial from the factory?
Have you put in an NH36A movement?

Sorry for all the questions, but I gots to know...

I've ordered a stack of parts for a custom mod including:
1. Flat Sapphire Crystal with AR
2. NH36A hacking movement
3. "S" crown and stem
4. Coin edge bezel

A local shop said they would get their watchmaker to do this mod for me, so all I need to do is factory age the bezel insert.
