Officer Down, Holly Springs, GA

Police Officer Joe Burson succumbed to injuries sustained when he was dragged by a vehicle during a traffic stop of a speeding vehicle at about 11:00 pm yesterday.

He had stopped the vehicle on Hickory Road between Little Road and Hickory Hills Drive. At some point during the stop the driver attempted to flee in the car and dragged Officer Burson alongside of it. Officer Burson was able to fatally shoot the subject while being dragged but suffered severe injuries when he fell to the pavement.

Officer Burson had served with the Holly Springs Police Department for 18 months.

Godspeed my brother, may you Rest In Peace.

Dreadful. I hoped he knew he killed his assailant prior to his own death. Rest in Peace, young sir.

Officer Down, Holly Springs, GA

This has been a bad few days for us locally. Many Sheriff’s Deputies shot while working off-duty security jobs in separate incidents around the Metro.

And this morning, the news of this tragic death - the community has universal sorrow for losing such a nice guy.

His Chief: "He was a model officer, if you had the ability to clone police officers, you would have wanted your officer to be Joe Burson."

As I write this, an armed suspect is on foot evading police dogs and FLIR helo’s in the neighborhood behind me - I have ultimate respect for our front line peace officers who are facing danger every day to protect us.

Godspeed his soul

Terrible loss of life, but I'm having a hard time understanding how this unfolds. How does the officer get that close, allowing himself to become entangled in a moving vehicle he has stopped for a violation? And why does he have to draw his weapon and kill someone as they flee, for speeding?

Was walking along Park Ave at 62nd St in Manhattan yesterday, a demented and disturbed street person was acting loud and disorderly in front of a very posh store. Two police officers stood close to him, trying to calm him down and hoping to subdue him without escalation. Five other officers stood nearby, in case something unforeseen happens and assistance is needed.

Cops are walking on egg shells these days, there could have been a dozen cell phones watching the scene. No easy solutions.
