Has Omega discontinued the sapphire display back on their watches?

Don't know if this topic has been visited already, but I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be a sapphire sandwich offered for Omega speedmasters any longer. I think this is just another example of corporate greed. Charge more and deliver less. The sapphire sandwich used to be one of the best bangs for the buck in the watch world IMHO.
Cheers all
Jim

As stated above, it is still there.

It's the new model with the upgraded bracelet that uses screws instead of pins.

Please elaborate on your belief that Omega is charging more and offering less.

See Omega's website:
http://www.omegawatches.com/collecti...ional/35765000

Sellers on-line:

http://www.jomashop.com/omega-watch-...30-01-006.html

There are more examples, but this is just to show that Swatch Group is now indicating that the "Watches are usually supplied with sapphire display backs". This says to me they are phasing out the sapphire display backs.

Any claims that Omega is phasing out sapphire display backs is absurd. They have been continuously increasing the number of models with display backs for years, and they are very proud of the Cote de Geneve en Arabesque finish on the new movements. Please try not to read into the generic text on grey market dealer websites.

Would be ok by me if they did. I like the handy work of the stainless steel backs.

I prefer the look and feel of the hesalite crystal. Even though its not as durable as sapphire, its cool that you can still buy a watch that is virtually identical to a watch first issued nearly 50 years ago. I would imagine if Rolex re-issued the 5512 with acrylic crystal it would be very popular.

Never had much interest in sapphire backs so this won't be giving me sleepless nights

Omega has increased the display backs to show off their in-house movements, but more interestingly they also want to show off the anti-magnetic abilities, so they are actually going to give display backs to all models if I am not mistaken, seeing how they are going about it, so you should be happy with this rather than complain that they are discontinuing display backs.

The intent of my thread was that Omega is changing from sapphire to mineral glass on their display backs going forward. A move that is as I stated in my thread, charge more and deliver less. This seems to be in line with corporate greed everywhere e.g., the 11.3 oz. pound of coffee.

I highly doubt this.

Has Omega discontinued the sapphire display back on their watches?

Was this a hunch?! What solid concrete evidence do you have?

On a non dive watch using a mineral crystal on the back is not a problem if they actually made the change. But given omega's quality, I do think it would be a step back imo.

Unless there is a underlying reason for this other than profit. But can't think of one. For me, I like any type of crystal... as long as it's sapphire.
