5227R Surprise

2nd post on my nascent but so far successful PP journey here as I recently posted about the 5235/50R. Was back at my AD closing purchase on some non-watch items and got offered a surprise 5227R after doing so!

It was incredibly perfect timing as a business partner and I were about to pull the trigger on a grey Rolex President as a transaction gift to our third party for selling one of our businesses.

Instead we now get to gift him this incredibly special Calatrava and I get to build a bit of PP history in the process.

Was my first time seeing and handling this piece and it is spectacular all around. The ivory lacquered dial and the classic dress design give it a distinct vintage feel that I’ve only ever seen in a new watch from PP timepieces.

Saw someone else post here that the hour markers on it give it bit of a non-PP flair and a VC homage (in that case I think it was a bit of a complaint). That being said I found it superior in every way to similar VC pieces I’ve handled and considered in the past but just couldn’t get excited about.

Lastly this was also my first time seeing a hunter caseback in person. What a fun feature but also the mirror on the interior of it is mind boggling in its quality and polish.

We’re getting an engraving on the back of it so I’ll post pics after I pick it up next week.

The 5227 is gorgeous, particularly the case and lug design. Hunter case also fabulous. What a gift!

Yes! That mirror finish on the caseback is just astonishing.

The 5227R is a gorgeous watch in all areas. Congrats for the opportunity and thanks for sharing your enjoying experience.

As for the VC thing, I think I don't really agree. Like for hands, many classical markers (and numerals) styles have been used through different brands.

Patek has used a lot of the applied faceted "obus" markers. That certainly particpated in influencing the view of Patek markers but they used many others (especially in the 1940-1980's area). Vacheron used a lot of classical markers as well, especially the straight "baton" ones. Like did Patek, JLC and (nearly all the) others...

The 5227's markers are quite unusual (i.e. not used that much during the last decades) though looking very classical. They are stepped and not made from 2 or 3 parts "put" together.

As always, it's in the details.

This caseback in indeed something very cool, especially since rare and usually making the watch much thicker.

The lugs are, to me, a masterpiece of balance.

A nice Calatrava to enjoy for sure.

The 5227 is an underrated reference IMO. Totally agree with you too - very hard to get excited about VC.

Congratulations on the successful business deal but as much as I love the 5227 I have to say paying retail plus tax so 44k here in the USD is just too much but beautiful piece

Great looking piece. How do you find the hinge on the left side of the case?
