I’m in my mid 50s, honestly, don’t think I will retire for another 15 years. I like working and having responsibilities.

Retired from civil service at 42 after 21 years. Worked full time for an additional 5 years until I got terminated. Started working 4 or 5 days a month for a firm which pays me very well. So I consider myself semi retired, even though I could retire permanently if I so choose.
I struggled and keep myself on a limited budget while younger, and have been able to invest enough to keep the wife and I going for another 50 years.
I'm rarely ever bored, (Golf, fish, read this forum, LOL) I feel great, travel extensively and live a fairly stress free life.
I highly recommend retirement if you can afford it. Life is too short, and you never know when it is going to end.....

38. I was good at controlling the wants to within reason.

By the by, you know how much it takes for most to retire? 50% more than they have.

Considered it a few times, now working harder than ever as a choice.

I’ve begun the 34th year of my career this month and at this time I plan to revisit the question in 3 to 6 years.

A common theme I hear from friends that have retired is :
“you shouldn’t retire based on the finances, Retire because you are ready.”

Retired at 51 after 26 years on the street. Very generous retirement plan, now living the dream each and every day. I’ve been asked several times to go back part time, politely declined each time.

My days are busier than ever and now I don’t have to worry about being sued or assaulted. Many years ago after being patched up once again at the ER my oldest, probably 7 or 8 at the time said Daddy, by the time you retire you’re just going to be one big scar.

Sleep like a baby now but I have to say that I can actually feel my blood pressure rise whenever I hear a siren or pass a squad car that has someone pulled over, some things will never change I guess.

Life is good.

58 years old. I still fill in for others during vacation and see still clients that cannot afford the cost of psychotherapy.

I’d like to retire when I’m 60 (7yrs), but like most of my plans, it will probably happen when I’m 63-64.

I sooo could retire today... but since I cannot I’ll focus trying to change my spending habits into saving habits in prep for a fixed income and simple life...hopefully.

Funny timing.

Started working for my dad at 16 after school. Went to college and got a degree and still worked there.

Fast forward to one month ago. My dad still worked part time but the business had changed so much I found myself not enjoying it much. We got an offer to sell that was so great it was like hitting the lottery.

Wife has an awesome career as a chief risk officer and is a part time professor in Boston. Never had kids so we are set.

If we had kids or wife didn’t do as well I would have probably kept it. Health insurance through my wife is awesome.

So I’ve been retired for one month and I’ve never felt better. I set an alarm every day and walk my dog in the am. That’s my job. Then I go to the gym and then I do odd jobs around the house to fix up small things to keep the wife happy.
Two weeks ago I went to Bermuda. End of August I’m taking a cruise from Boston up to Maine, into Canada. In December it’s a Caribbean cruise.

I am loving life. I am 49.

Best decisions I ever made were working with my dad, marrying my wife and not having kids.

I may get a no stress part timer in the fall if I find a good one. Even if it’s just minimum wage just to stay around some people and keep a little bit busy.

Turning 50 and have no desire to stop. Self-employed and work about 15-20 hours a week, have been for the last ten years. Basically taking the summer off. I have a great lifestyle that I need to fund and I love what I do. As long as I am healthy I plan to go on.

I could retire now at 41 and live comfortably, if not lavishly. Unfortunately, I have a taste for the lavish. I'll be pushing myself until 50 to acquire real (to me) money. If it doesn't happen by then, I'm done. Work is for the birds, and I have too many other interests that could keep me otherwise pleasantly occupied.

I’ll be 59 in two weeks. I spent 28 years in the Air Force, retired 14 years ago. I went to work as a civilian for the government, right after the military, as many retired military do. I plan to retire from civil service in 5 years. I have just accepted a new job and assignment and look forward to that new adventure. When that assignment is done I plan to fully retire and enjoy the time with my family. Good luck to all in your retirements. Aloha, Tim

I'm 35 and *could* potentially retire now - but not to the tune of the lifestyle I would want to live (like my watches / cars / travel a bit too much). And then at some point there will be kids

I'm giving it another 5-10 years to put all the ducks in a row (figuring out passive income/investments, procuring the sale of my companies, growing net worth, etc) until I potentially even give myself the option of doing so.

I don't need 'work' to keep me busy, but enjoy the challenges, rewards and process of building a business and working within one - so not something that I'm ready to give up just yet.

Retired from full time at 56, still work part time to cover health care. Health care is a big problem, when I retired from LE my health care vanished, the warden isn't offered health care from her job (yet). I may be able to pull the plug completely in a couple of years.

I retired at 49 with a very generous pension based on 30 years of service. It has been the best 5 years of my life. I still have children at home and get to be involved with all of the activities. My marriage has improved because we can enjoy each other and work on the issues. I have never been bored.

I agree.

We are a lot alike

I’m 51 and have been with one company for 30 years. I own a small business as well and just sold it this month.

I hope to fully retire in 3-5 years.

I’m 37 and my wife and I plan to retire at 50 if all things work out. How realistic it is I don’t know yet. 4 daughters to put through university ( hopefully ) 4 weddings and 4 deposits on a first home to get out of the way before that happens though. Although it’s always been in the back of my mind that I would sign properties from my rental portfolio over to them instead.

I'm in my 20s, so retirement is a ways off. However, I can't imagine being truly retired and not having anything to do during the day. Hopefully by then I can figure out some sort of side business I can do that keeps me somewhat occupied day to day.

I retired at 70 after 44 years in the same profession. I love every minute of being retired. My wife and I travel, we go to theater, museums, etc. We have homes in New York City and Boca Raton, Florida. Our main residence is in the DC area My kids are on their own. We have two beautiful granddaughters, ages 10 and 6.
