I undestand your point, and i also think Seiko Monster is s good watch and i also wanted to have one, maybe orange.
But in the same time i wear my Rolex with proud, because it is like wearing some history on your wrist, and in the same time i wear a watch and also a jewel.

Following your mind, why to buy a monster if you can buy something cheaper?

Seikos are time watches in their price point. I have a skx009 which is a fine watch in the $500 and under range. Hell, it might be better than the sub $1000 range but they don't compare to Rolex in those terms.

I am wearing my black monster today. A lot of different watches at a lot of different price points all serve a purpose. Comparing the seiko monster to a rolex is like saying why should I buy an original Salvador Dali when I can print the same picture off of the computer and hang it on the wall. You are right, you can. You will be looking at the same basic image and both will serve as decoration, but one is a lot more valued, appreciated by many, has a lot of history, is likely to appreciate in value, and will likely give more of a sense of enjoyment and accomplishment when you look at it.

That said, I am not knocking the Seiko at all, as I said, I have one on right now and it serves a purpose. I wear it and G-shocks to work regularly, because my watches can take a beating at work on any given day. If I damage or lose a watch that I have less than $150 in, it sucks, but all things considered, I can manage to salvage the day. Using the same analogy above, I wouldn't hang original artwork in my office either - prints and pictures all the way. Original artwork wouldn't be appreciated and would only be put at risk in my office.

Weigh your options and do what makes you happiest.

The idea of buying a disposable mechanical watch is absurd to me.

The OP brags about spending $200 on this when a $20 quartz watch tells better time, lights up in the dark and doesn't need lume recharging, and my phone has all of the grand complications that I could ever think of. His reasoning for owning a high-end mechanical watch isn't the reason why most of us choose to buy them. Who buys a Patek just to tell time?

This is a classic example of setting up a strawman argument and trolling. Most TRF members are just too friendly to say otherwise. Imagine what flames a poster would get if he bragged about his Rolex or Grand Seiko on a Seiko Monster forum.

As an Import auto repair specialist 20 years experience, I totally disagree with the "porsche being better quality than hyundai accent" statement, I have driven and repaired both, hyundais are much more reliable and cheaper to repair
Same with Jags, rovers, ferraris you name it, all the hype is the brand name

Old thread...but since its been resurrected....
Seiko Monster...I've owned 2 in the past, and while definitely not to a Rolex level or even close, they are great bang for the buck mechanical watches, and cool looking to boot. While I wouldn't call them disposable in the sense of being "junk" they're not a watch that I would spend any money to service. For the sub $200 cost to buy, I would just run it into the ground if I had one long term.

Indeed, just buy a new one with warranty. Why should you spend money on watchmaker and parts for a 200 bucks watch? That really doesnt make sense.

IIRC, a replacement movement is about $50. Much cheaper to swap than paying for a service.

Hey, to each their own. I have no problem with a Seiko auto - in fact, if I wasn't so over-the-moon in love with my watch, I'd get one. But wrist time would be short to non existent for anything but my 14060 right now.

The Seikos are very good and popular watches and they are owned by folks who also own the so-called luxury watches.

There's no shame in wearing a Seiko or even a $10 digital from Walmart.

As in all things fashion, it's not so much what you wear, it's how you wear it.
