16613 with serial # that's too early!?

I'm thinking of buying a 16613 bluesy SM.
It comes with the guarantee card that has the correct Style # (R16613360B9315)
but the serial number starts with 845****, which dates it to 1984, before the 16613 was being made!

I'm hoping there's a logical expanation for it....?

thank you in advance (my first post)

Welcome to the RF. yes that’s very odd it’s pre-runner the 16803 bi colour blue was about for 4 years 83/84 to 87/88. 16613 came c 88 so 8.45 million I can’t see being correct personally….. as all 16613 I have handled/recorded are serials pre fixed with a letter eg R,L,E,X etc

Guarantee CARD ?

Therein lies a pointer to something being incorrect.

Without photos it is just conjecture, but is it possible this is a 1988 watch and the serial number is actually R45****, but the R is misread as an 8?

Ask for some photos, in particular between the lugs both at 12 O'Clock and 6 O'Clock. This should give the model ref and S/N

.
I'll take a guess. Is this what you are referring as a guarantee card ?

Just out of interest for those who follow such things, I have documented a number of examples of 16803s in the Rxxxxxx case number range, including one presented by Rolex UK (with paperwork) to someone who had done property work for them but been noticed on site wearing a fake !

It was very common for generations of the same model to overlap and indeed I have a dealer promotion leaflet here with both the 1665 and 16660 advertised simultaneously :

In the OP's case I think there is missing information and I would like to ask :

1. what he means by the "card," as such a watch should have had a paper COSC certificate. Does he have a Rolex USA holder for papers as shown above, or a Rolex service card, or a later, fake warranty card?

2. what the numbers are on the watch itself?

It is unfortunate when sellers choose Google Earth to photograph their items.

Could that be an X at the start, rather than an 8 ?

I have a 16610 at X4562xx which might be consistent with that suggestion, as Rolex would designate a batch of case numbers to 1661x cases, variously then made into steel or bicolour variants with -0 or -3 terminations.

Looks most like an 8 agreed, but X is the only possibility if legit - dealer ink font look correct.

Op we are going need photo of the serial number of the south lug - or a better photo .

Ps Sometimes there is a white adhesive sticker about 1 inch x 1/8th of an inch, top left or middle, on the other side of the cert too with serial printed in black on it.

Update - I got a higher resolution photo...
It's actually an S, not an 8
AND it matches the serial # on the Bezel!

So I'm buying it!

Thank you all for your help.

Although the above makes me a little nervous - here's the doc at a higher resolution.
It seems like the serif on the S is making it look like an 8 at lower resolution..?

Just a bit confused here, easily done

Are you saying the watch s/n is S869xxxx and the papers show 8464392? I've not clicked on any of the links btw.

Sorry - I know it's getting a bit confusing.

A higher res photo of the Guarantee shows the serial number is S464xxx .
This matchres exactly the Serial # on the Bezel (a photo I have not uploaded).
It also now dates the watches correctly.

Does this make sense?

Maybe something is getting lost in transalation - you don't normally have a serial number on the bezel. Perhaps you could upload a photo.....a picture is worth a 1000 words.

Solved... great.
Hope the rest of watch is nice. Looks like a blue sunburst that has purpled a bit as some years do - I like the purple dial personally. Ps Should be Tritium T25 footer, and tritium handet if dial/hands are original, and not lume up when UV/LED light taken away.

I've been looking for a purple example for little while.
VERY excited to be getting this!

I was really hoping there'd be an explanation for the SN, as I like this watch a lot.

It has the Tritium footer.
I'm not sure if the hands are original, as the patina is slightly different to the dial - I guess I'll see under UV!
