Patina or damage?

Still learning the fine line between patina, tropical and damage.
On a watch like this one, there are stains on the dial, is that ok, or attractive, or just plain damage?
A potential concern is also how does stains/imperfections will evolve over time, do they further deteriorate?

Thanks for the help!

Each to their own on what to call it. It would come with a discount. Not a premium.

There is no fundamental difference between patina and damage IMO. All that matters is whether you find it appealing. Obviously, as Per mentioned, the price must reflect the condition.

The seller would call it patina, I would call it damage. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

It appears to be an original dial, and damaged from years of use and exposure. Don't fret though, many of these old, vintage gilt watches have or had damaged dials and hands. Through the years many of these watches that have had their dials and/or hands replaced or repaired.

I like dials with damage and age. They are more reasonable and sadly I tend to have more faith in their authenticity.

The dial is deteriorated and will continue to degrade.

Moisture damage will never be appealing to me no matter what fancy names dealers or collectors might give to a dial like this such as "Starry Night Sky" dial or "Space Dial". I'm actually not trying to be funny, I've seen it.

A dial with moisture damage is indicative of this watch not doing its job, which is keeping moisture out. Also indicative that other parts could be rusty obviously. Tropical dials are technically damaged too but that's appealing to me because the watch could still have been doing its job. Radium dust burns are fine too for the same reason.

So the term "tropical" is not a fancy name for a dial?

They’re all fancy names. But what I said was I wouldn’t buy a moisture damaged dial no matter what fancy name it’s been given.

If you’re the seller it’s patina (with a creative/romantic name). If you’re the buyer, it’s damaged!!
