Half a million dollar mil-sub?

It was one of the finest, but . . . Crikey!

Thank you for sharing

What does the triple 6 on the caseback stand for?

The triple six here is simply the individual issue number of the watch that year.

I wonder how much that impacted the final figure. People are sometimes somewhat crazy.

Full spec mil sub....double ref rather than plain 5513....Hudson letter....provenance from having passed through an A1 dealer....issue number with novelty value....perhaps only a few dozen like it in the world....what do you think it should have sold for?

Compare watches sold in greater numbers like the Paul Newman Daytonas, which lack the provenance and arguably aren’t as substantial or good looking.

Agree but still a crazy price for a double ref.
It’s more than the last 2 5517’s

A 5513 sold at Southerbys for £56k on Wednesday missing the 60min bezel though

BJS Online has a Couple of nice examples one has been for sale at $350 for several years .I thought due to the price so K does have a chance of selling it then ?

Tough to have a bidding war for a mismatched caseback with interesting numbers. Let’s hope the winner never finds out what he paid a lot extra for. Or even better; that he already knew. ;)

Same watch sold for 173k$ in October 2015 also at Christies Dubai.

When you buy such an expensive watch at Christie's, Sotheby's, Phillips ... you have to be a real expert or you get bamboozled.

Fair point, but I'd argue that you need a real military watch collector who cares about the differences between a regular vintage Sub and military-issued Subs. Sure, they're super cool but is it worth the massive cost difference?

There's nothing else like a PN Daytona, and the visual appeal and feel of a watch is subjective, of course. If this 5513/17 was on a table next to a PN Daytona, I know which watch I'd pick up, regardless of value.

Would be a great fantasy choice to have to make!

Ah, the great Paul Newman Daytona which all must love....

....a jumbled juxtaposition of circles and brutal geometry in a dance of awkward asymmetry, the discordant clash of legion inconsistent type-faces, supererogatory lines on sub-dials which serve only to confuse and most commonly no interesting provenance whatsoever.

It would be a step too far to write "Emperor's new clothes," so let us happily agree "chacun à son goût."

definitely better than 'london sky dial', 'moon crater' or other ridiculous pseudonyms for damaged dials

I love it every time you post this. The first and only time that Rolex acknowledged the "Paul Newman" dial

During a global pandemic filled with economic uncertainty, it’s nice to see things like this. I hope whomever purchased it wears it and gets as much pleasure from it as one can from a few thousand dollar 1990’s beat up 16610.
