WOW! A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Up/Down 'Lumen'

Want want want

Meet the Datograph Up/Down "Lumen." This is a platinum Datograph with an insane dial treatment that mixes smoked sapphire and huge sections of luminous material to create a watch is both translucent and radiant at the same time.

Very limited - only 200 pieces.

Sapphire dial is quite interesting.

If I found $100k between my couch cushions, I would definitely strongly maybe possibly probably consider spending it on this. Stunning.

Very interesting. Wonder what the dial looks in the light?

Still waiting for a 12 hour+ chrono Dato. 30 min is pretty useless, I think with that much chunk there’s room for the mechanism.

i prefer the regular Pt datograph. The lumen Lange 1 moon phase is my favorite Lange 1 though.

60 minutes i get, but 12 hours for this type of watch is unnecessary IMO and adding a hand and a busier sub dial would be a major detractor to me.

A chrono you can use in the dark - now that is a useful additional complication.

I agree on both accounts. The only lumen I would consider is the grande Lange 1 Moon!

I have to say I’m disappointed in ALS on this one. They fact you can see the date wheel numbers under the date windows (1 and 3 in this pic) when the watch is lumed is not attractive to me at all

ok, it may be heresy to say this amongst ALS fans (and as an owner of a dato), but i don't like this at all.

kudos to the creativity and ingenuity, but the execution to me makes it look like a gimmicky piece. not unlike an RM, which I'm sure is also a technical marvel, but the transparency of this is not like, say, an RO open works.

also the entire concept of 'lumen' - to have the central focus be about having THAT much luminescence is contradictory to the purity and elegance of traditional craftsmanship that i thought ALS steadfastly and unyieldingly held onto as their core brand DNA.

clearly not in the same realm of craftsmanship, artistry and provenance, but this other piece in my drawer is the FIRST thing that came to mind when i first saw this highly limited 200-pc model! i know...heresy!!!

Alas, no as found out about this timepiece too late. For the past few months up until around the end of this year am focusing on revamping percussion / drum setup.

kidding aside, this is a nice piece but can't justify the premium over a PT Datograph.

I have to admit, the only Lumen I really liked was the Lange 1 Moonphase... because of the moonphase. The glow really makes it pop.

Everything else has felt forced to me. :( And I'm a Lange addict.

No. As stated elsewhere this is just a plain lazy, lack of imagination money grab.

Hopefully it was just a quick way to dump a bunch of PT cases and Dato movements so that a newer, fresher iteration of the Datograph arrives next year.

I was lucky enough to see a friends piece today in the flesh and compare side by side with a standard Dato up/down.
The Lumen is an amazing piece, visually on the wrist due to the smoked colour and more open dial it actually appears much smaller than the standard up/down. I was really struck by the improved clarity of the hands on the pearlescent sub dials and especially the chrono hand in white lume works brilliantly as it sweeps over the dial - Clarity of the chrono display is on another level compared to the standard black version which I wasn’t expecting.
Didn't get to see it's night operation but in daylight it is a stunner.
