New to the forums, just stumbled upon this thread. I'm also a general dentist and agree with the 2 directly above me. They're right!
Also, I would like to say that in regards to the "Invisalign treatment will revert without retainer wear" opinion, that's true. But it's also true for all orthodontics. Retainer wear is an absolute MUST post orthodontics. Hope you made the right decision for yourself! Good luck! |

What's the best whitening system you dentist use on patients?
Do they still do laser ? Or is all take home trays after initial treatment. There seems to be so much information out there it's hard to get through the trash

My gf has veneers for all of her top teeth. Looks good in my opinion. She was awake for the work. I have a friend that had straight teeth, but thought they were too small. Her doctor gave her a "gum lift" and made more of her teeth show. That looks great too.

It's really up to you. I'm ugly, so I wouldn't even consider it. Kind of like putting a paint job and nice wheels on a Ford Pinto.

I'm getting my mouth done in April down in Rio. One of my wife's and my best personal
friends for 20 years is one of the top cosmetic dentists there. He's a Hublot wearer but I wont won't hold that against him. My cost is 20000 CAD versus 50000 CAD if done in Calgary by the local horde of Lamborghini and AMG driving dentists. |

i had 6 veneers done at the top front (didnt have a choice sadly) and i couldnt be happier... im comfortable smiling now. I will say i did not choose a stark white colour as i wanted them to look natural not like a Beverly Hills wannabe so i chose a shade close to my bottom row.
After the initial moulds done and they grinded my original teeth making a temp set until the veneers were made the whole procedure took about 2 hours, i was awake and it was painless

Anyone have Veneers?
I'm a general dentist. Some good explanations from dentists above. The problem here is that the OP has a misconception about beauty. He is looking for a "manufactured" smile. Form follows function and when teeth are in their proper place and aligned properly, they look good and function properly. Sometimes gingival (gum) tissue can be shaped or contoured to give the proper proportion which also enhances esthetics. The term "cosmetic dentist" also is a misnomer. There is no such designated specialty and when you have someone who holds himself out as a specialist in this area, watch out. Stay away from advertising and talk to your friends about their experiences. A good dentist should be able to take time with you after making diagnostic models of your teeth, and explain all your options and the pros and cons associated with them. There are good esthetic conscientious dentists in every town but they are not likely the ones promoting themselves in glossy publications. Good dentists are successful due to their happy, satisfied patients referring their friends and family, not by expensive advertising, which ultimately increases your cost.

Bumping this thread. Anyone had this procedure done recently? I noticed that this is pretty popular now recently especially with the use of lumineers wherein about 0.3 mm of the teeth is shaved to prepare it for the lumineers bonding, and so that it does not look bulky. Note that lumineers or Emax is a brand and others call it dental contact lens etc. I understand that shaving an otherwise healthy teeth is not recommended and not practical, but if you have chronic discoloration due to eating habits etc that doesn’t respond to whitening then this could be an option. It lasts about 15-20 years with regular maintenance which we do anyway. So if you are in your 30’s, single, can afford it, wants to look better, then this could be a nice option to have. If you’re in your 30’s you’ll have to probably have it replaced once in your life, but you’ll have the benefit of having a more aesthetic smile. I am saying 30s because this is usually the time when we can afford it without breaking the bank. There’s some people with nice smile that had me wondering why their teeth are white (not in a bad way) and how they maintain it, and I have to admit it left a lasting positive impression on me. People buy nice watches to make them happy. Why not buy a nice smile? There’s some dentists around the world (US, Brazil, Dubai, etc.) who are skilled in performing this procedure that makes it beautiful while looking like natural teeth and not the chiclet type seen when done incorrectly. There’s some bad examples (Gary Busey etc.) but there are also many great examples. All one has to do is to google before and after pictures of celebrities and non-celebrities who had this procedure done. Am I missing something? Or am I just rationalizing it because I’m considering this procedure?

My wife had grey teeth due to tetracycline taken by her mother in pregnancy – this makes your teeth look really grey.
She had her first set of veneers (only the top teeth) twenty five years ago and they were really bulky We had them replaced because they were going translucent (and you could see the grey teeth beneath them) and started failing. The second set were fixed to her teeth about seven years ago and look far more natural. She did not opt for a dazzling white colour and they look great. She had the work done while awake and it was not pleasant. They do have a lifespan and we have been told 10 to 15 years, so this is an ongoing and expensive procedure. As people have said, you will need your teeth ‘planing down’ to fit them. I would think long and hard before having this procedure. If your teeth and smile are causing you to lose confidence, or look really bad, then it is a seriously good end result. |

Never saw any solid recommendations for whitening systems. We have used the strips and some new powder stuff. They work ok but curious what other dentists here might recommend to try. |

I’d be interested to hear any suggestions solid recommendations as well. My dentist gave me a custom tray a few years ago, along with a tube of at home whitening gel every visit. I’ve seen very minimal results and it’s probably more of a placebo effect. I’m tempted to try the in office whitening. My dentist offers the Glo whitening system. Not sure if I want to drop $499 on it, unless they can guarantee some good results. I think there is an at home version for $399.

It’s my opinion that people with perfect teeth.....look like they have fake teeth.

Why mess with your teeth if they are healthy and white? Veneers look fake and only look good on screen.

37 now and had my top 4 done almost 20 years ago now. I had major staining on my front teeth from medication as a child and no amount of whitening was making it better. Had my dentist match my other whitened teeth and it looks completely natural.
Only issue I had was getting two of them knocked out in college taking an overhand right to the mouth. Other than that I haven't hand any issues or maintenance other than my normal teeth cleaning every 6 months. |

Rather like my eyes, I would always leave my teeth well alone if they have no functional problems. Certainly nothing for cosmetic reasons. One set of eyes, one set of teeth; why mess with them?
