Platinum Pateks: Better with or without diamonds?
Hello gentlemen,
What is everyone's opinion on platinum pateks with the small diamond embedded in the case at 6 o'clock between the lugs? It irks me just a little bit, as on some watches it seems out of character (5196, 5146 even 5960) as they are to my eye more classically styled. A diamond seems too modern a twist and a bit incongruous. I personally wish it were possible to buy a platinum Patek without one. What does everyone else think? Anyone know the history/reason why the Stern's decided to do this? Certainly no disrespect to anyone that has one; on the contrary I'd like to hear about it. Did the diamond affect your decision to buy one? Is it visible while wearing it? Mike |

I could live with one!
Edit: It is pretty much not visible anyways...

I own a couple of platty pateks (5960p and a 5146p) don't mind them at all. If they were highly visible it might be a different story since I'm not really a diamond kind of person (to each his/her own). That said, you don't notice the diamond unless you are looking for it. Looking at the dial head on, you don't see it. It's between the lugs at 6 o'clock and hidden partially by the strap. Certainly not a huge rock either.

Without. Not sure my opinion matters since the only way I could buy one is to sell my car.

I have to agree with you Mike, I think it's one of those things that make the platinum pieces even more special. Not to exaggerate anything but it's nice to have that little hidden stone that only a few people know about.

Diamonds on any watch is too blingy for my taste.

I'm not a big fan of diamonds on watches, but the small rock on a Patek distinguishing it as platinum is no problem. It's actually pretty cool

The diamond is not obvious, it does not bother me. Instead it make the platinum more special..

I'm not sure about that one but do the older models have one as well or is this something you only see in the new in-house line? What about your 5070p?

It really doesn't matter since its on the bottom of the case, obstructed by your strap. Its really Pateks way of giving you an easy way to prove to someone that its plat and not SS or WG, which is kinda useful when your watch costs 30% that WG.
