Is birthyear watch overrated?

The concept definitely sounds neat and at one point I seriously looked for one.

Recently I came across an excellent 1680 Red that not only was from my birthyear but also from the same quarter as my birth month.

A few years ago I would've likely jumped on it and I have to admit I was tempted. But beyond the coolness factor it's not like I have any connection to it.

What's your take on a birthyear watch?

Looking for one now. Once you own a bunch of shiny new ones, it gives you a way to branch out.

Everybody has their own tics and wrinkles..

Personally I just do not understand the idea of having a watch from your birth year. The entire concept eludes me but I suppose that's just the way I'm wired..

I also don't understand the concept of buying a watch and sticking it in a safe for 18 years for a child. Don't get me wrong.. I've bought my kids Rolex and cars for graduation and other occasions. But I'm pretty sure that if I pulled a watch out of the safe from back in the dark ages my kids would be polite, but it may not fit in with their current life views..

I wouldn't openly criticize anybody for such a desire; I just don't get it..

I like having a watch that was ticking somwehere in the world...who knows where...during every moment...significant or not...that I can remember. Especially at my age. 20 years ago I would not have cared. Here is my new 1964 Air-King.

I get it for some but having a birth year Rolex doesn't have any particular appeal for me. Having a machine that old that will likely out live me would probably just depress me.

I can understand the concept but never have gotten one for myself (yet). I did, however, custom order a dornbluth 99.1 with my last name and 2013 engraved in the back. It'll serve as my son's birthyear watch but it ain't sitting in no safe until he's old enough. When he's old enough hopefully the idea of a birthyear piece will take a back seat to the fact dad wore his watch all those years.

He's going to have some cool stuff to choose from when I'm pushing up daisies but there's really no telling what he'll do at that point with them. If he has no interest in watches and decided to part with them ill be sure to remind him before kicking the bucket that nobody is going to want his customized dornbluth and for him to save it for his kids.

As an alternate option, for a comparably priced birthyear 1680 Red, I can get a New 116600 in my name, be the first and only owner, create my own memories with it and someday my pass it down.

I was crazy about having a birth year watch for awhile and when I got one the high wore off after a few months and off it went. I think it's just another trail to run down for awhile, at least it was for me

Damn! I knew I should have come to you guys first. The serial number is all roman numerals and the warranty card is in Hieroglyphics. Is that bad?

I don't think anything highly collectible came out on the year of my birth unfortunately.

My birth year watch happens to b m first red sub. I've always wanted a red sub so the birth year is icing on the cake.

Everything else being equal, I would prefer a birth year watch since I would have that birth year connection!

What I don't get is why people try to get a watch made in the birth year. To me, it is to find a watch that would have been sold around the time I was born.

I was born at 6.32 am, what watch do you suggest I'd be looking for?

The watch has to be right - I'm not too bothered about the year. To me, it's just sentimentality, but I understand it.

Assuming you are in the US, sold in London on the day you were born, perhaps a GMT. :-)

I like the idea of owning a watch born around the same time I was. I know it's not an exact science but we can get close enough.

I'm getting "birth year" watches for my sons, and tucking them away. If they don't like them when they are 18, I'll hold on to them until they do like them. It will mean something to them when they're old enough (be it 18 or 38).

I don't really get why the birth year phenomenon is so strange?

I was never that into birth year watches. I did however run into my big red from the correct year which is cool but in the end it came down to model and condition. So now I pretty much have the coolest watch from my year in exceptional condition. Quite cool but I would have been fine buying one from another year if the watch was right.

My recommendation is to always buy the right watch. If it's from the right year it's kind of icing on the cake.
