Anyone Never Sold One of Their Rolexes?

I bought a standard ‘80s two-tone Datejust in ‘84 or ‘85, had my jeweler family friend swap the dial for a black Tapestry dial a couple of years later, and happily wore it every day until 2016.

Then my wife, who inherited her mom’s gold Date, suggested maybe I too would enjoy a second watch. She had been wearing the Evelyn we got in the late ‘80s. I “discovered” the SS white dial Daytona, got on the list in about August of 2016, and waited. By December, I got tired of waiting and bought a slightly used platinum Daytona that I’ve been wearing ever since. I still have my DJ, but stopped “forcing myself” to wear it once a month. But I still have it.

So there ya go — over 30 years of wearing a Rolex, and I’ve never sold one!

Who else can say that?

This works when you own what you like/want. For some its the search that keeps them looking/trying.

Good for you if your happy with what you have! I probably would be too...I've thought about consolidating for a PM Daytona and calling it a day but...I'm scared.

Interesting. I've followed a somewhat similar path. Acquired a pre-owned 16030 DateJust in 1992, had the dial changed to a grey tapestry a few years later and wore it like that for ~17 years. I've since added a 16710 GMT Master II and 16750 Explorer II as well as an Omega Seamaster Diver 300m that gets more wear than the DJ lately. I still really like the DJ, but I can't imagine selling it. It's been present for many major occasions in my life.

Can't say the same! I've bought and sold plenty.

How often do you wear the DJ? That feeling of "forcing" to wear a piece more often than otherwise has always been a sign for me it's time to part.

I used to wear it once a month, but now I don't wear it at all. Haven't put it on in a year or two. I haven't sold it more out of laziness than sentiment. I don't really get the "I got married wearing this watch. I can never sell it" thing. I don't have the rented tux or the belt I wore to my wedding either. If my AD ever gets me something I really want, I'll probably sell it. For now, I guess it's the watch I'd wear if I sent my Daytona in for service.

Never sold any Rolex (or watch) I’ve ever bought. Bought my first Rolex in 1985 … still have it … wear it once a year, maybe twice, maybe once every two years.
I find I wear my newest “toys” more then the rest.

Wish I’d been able to afford to buy my first Rolex 30 years ago, a new house, arrival of our first child and associated bills were my priority back then, watches were close to bottom of the range quartz models.

Delighted that you have been able to hang on to yours, congratulations.

I am pretty new collector compare to most people here. I purchased 2 Rolexes in 2019. Since Covid19 I spent a lot of time on TRF and saw a lots of gorgeous Rolex incomings, so I wanted to own some too. I have a chance to acquire 10 Rolexes in 2020 and 5 in 2021, all from Rolex boutique/AD at MSRP (see my signature below).

I have 17 Rolexes now without selling one and never have a plan to sell in the near future.

I bought my date sub back in 1999 and have wore it every day since then. Only recently I set it aside to wear my newly acquired BLNR and Panda. :) Never sold any watches or plan to.

Me either as far as I can recollect. They get worn till broken. Who wants to buy a broken watch? Lol. This is regarding my non Rolex watches that a service wouldn’t make sense for.

I never sold a watch including Rolex. I don't want to have to purchase a watch wear it and then decide if I don't like it and have to resell it. I'd much rather try on the models at an AD and then target the pieces I want.

None yet. Was gifted a 16013 in 1989, wore it daily for close to 30 years. Recently gave it to my daughter. Bought myself a DJ in 2019 then a Sub, then another 5! Now I'm rethinking where I want to end up so might sell a couple to get a couple different models.

I have bought 11 new Rolex dating back to a SS Datejust with blue dial in 1984. Since then my watch “collection” has mostly been one or two “nice” watches along with other less expensive pieces. I had one peak around 2002 where I had what was for me a lot of money in watches collecting dust in my safe.
I am back now to the original formula. I have my last two Rolex purchases, a Speedmaster, and 7 or 8 lesser value pieces. I am waiting on a red OP41, that is currently the only watch I am seeking.

I was lucky enough to have good taste in watches in the early 70's when I bought my 5513 and 1675. The 5513 was purchased in Switzerland in 1970 right out of college. In 1976 my wife asked me what I wanted as her wedding gift to me. I loved the red/blue GMT. These watches are very special.
