What Would You Do ?

If you caught Aaron Judge’s 62nd Home Run, would you give the ball back or sell it ???

I don’t know much about sports memorabilia but I’d like to think that I would return the baseball to Judge

But $ 2,000,000 is something to think about…..

My son with Aaron Judge ( when he played AAA ball )

Is selling it to Aaron Judge an option? (Sort of)

Maybe not “ sell “ but trade for tickets/ signed bat/ jersey, I think that would be totally fair.

Judge himself said the fan who caught the ball has “ got every right to it”

Sell to highest bidder. If there's a bid tie and one of the bidder's is Judge, I'll let him have it.

I really like what Pujols said about his 700 ball - essentially that it's for the fans and it's up to them with what they decide to do with it.

Nobody has "rights" to the ball except the person that caught it. Would be hard for 99% of the population to do the expected thing of turning it over vs. selling it for $500k/1M/2M to take care of their family. You just won the lottery, why tear the ticket up?

FWIW, the company (Memory Lane) that made the 2M offer have stated that they’d loan the ball to the Yankees for exhibit. Maybe cashing in isn’t half bad afterall

If I am a fan then 4 season tickets behind home plate for life, free parking and all I can eat or drink so long as the ball stayed on display in perpetuity.

I guess my take on it is the athlete can afford to buy it back at market price, they make enough to do so. If they value it as much/more than a collector then I'd likely give them a deal based off of other offers. I just think its a bit weird when fans are sort of shamed for selling milestone momentos when most of the time they aren't offered anything more than some jerseys and tickets valued at $1,000-2,000 in exchange.

Fortunately for baseball fans across the world, I've never been to a game, and don't have any plans on it in the future so the chances of me catching some priceless ball is about nil.

Sports aren't really my thing and I'm not a huge fan of collecting memorabilia. Even so, I have no idea why some fans just give stuff up. Like do they think it makes them best friends or something?

I read about another guy who caught some historic ball, and the team wouldn't even give him a meet and greet with the player so he sold it for millions. It was that article that really solidified my opinion on the matter.

These people only care about the stuff, and alot of times these fans care about the people; so they get taken advantage of. I don't care who it is, if you don't respect me half as much as the free market, we're not even talking.

I agree with you on every point.
I would have a hard time passing up the cash, even though my heart would tell me to give it back.

As a fan of the NY Yankees for more than 50 years I would like to see the ball on display for the public.
Of course, that could be easily arranged through the buyer.

I probably shouldn’t let childhood sentiments enter into that type of decision.

It would be nice to say I would give it back, but, two million is life changing for me and lots of my family and friends. A ball for him, isn't life changing, it's a ball that may be displayed on a mantlepiece.

I would sell it.

Same. That's a life changing amount of money for 99% of the population.

It's a joke that teams offer a signed bat or jersey and a few tickets. They are Billion dollar companies owned by Billionaires and pay their employees many millions of dollars. They obviously don't value the items very much or they'd pay for them.

Interesting moral dilemma.

On the one hand, the ball like millions of others made is no different from the next one. The one that he happened to hit that day is no magic talisman. Just a plain old ball that came up in the rotation. One day it's worth $7 and the next it's 2 million. It isn't sacred. Just a ball.

His achievement is the celebration not some stupid ball.

So for me a person that pays 2 millions for it is the sucker. Ultimately some guy with the most money will end up with the ball so they can try to hone in on the achievement.

I'd sell it and laugh all the way to the bank.

What Would You Do ?

I would imagine the Yankees would pay fair market value if the person that caught it said they were not giving it back. But, man it would be tough to keep a guys 62nd home run ball. The catch was made fair and square but that’s someone’s life’s work. Maybe what judge would view as his greatest accomplishment in the game. There is no doubt, the guy that caught it is already in talks with the Yankees and judges manager about how to get this ball back.

The tough thing for the guy that caught it, is aaron judge is supposed to be one of the nicest guys in baseball. If i caught it and they put me in a room with him, and he asked for it, no way i could keep it. A lot of good karma for returning something like that. But it’s a significant amount of money, whew. Tough one!

I'd have a hard time not laughing and asking if they were serious if they ran one of those offers by me.

I'd 'offer' partial ownership of the ball to him and his fans. The ball will reside for all to see at ______. Figure 50,000 'shares' at only $100 each and you get an NFT.
