I know we're all flush with money here, but you can't completely ignore that you could get two Speedmasters, the watch and the motorcycle, for the price of a Daytona.

Yes,Rolex failed and Omega passed the test.Of course, this test was many, many years ago.

Try using the side of your pointer finger dragged under the crown to wind. Pinch grip winding is futile on these crowns. They should have left them sharp vs polished.

NASA made their pick, that means something.

I have owned both, sold both off. The Daytona is very pretty and not very legible the Speedy is super legible and not very pretty. That said I am considering an EW321, we’ll see.

Here’s mine..
I’m not a huge speed master or Daytona guy. I think 9/10 people would choose the Daytona, and a lot of that is because it’s a Rolex. At least for the one I have, my favorite thing about it is that’s it’s not a Rolex. I also love the crystal and the sapphire caseback!

Actually,NASA did NOT pick this watch.They noticed after the flight that the astronaut was wearing this watch(It was just his own personal watch).It was a hand wound watch rather than
an automatic because gravity is needed to turn the rotor and an auto would not function properly under the circumstances. Afterward,Omega picked up on this and used the photo for their promotion.

I like four-digit cosmographs. 6263 I think is the reference. But not Daytonas.

Otherwise, 321 or 861 Speedmaster Professional please.

Yes astronauts used it, but NASA officially sourced and compared several watches through tests. You can see those tests stickied in the Omega section of TRF. This is why the back of the watch today says “Flight qualified by NASA for all manned space missions.” This is Technology Readiness Level 9 qualification.

Manual wind is not required for space. Inertia from arm movements winds an automatic just fine. But more importantly, automatic watches were not common at the time.

I’ve owned both. Still own my 321. That answers the main question. For me, the history, legibility, and the versatility (strap monster!!) of the Speedy wins out from a general design preference between the two.

Obviously if comparing a new Daytona to a base Speedy there is going to be a bit of a disparity in the feel of the two. However, similar retail to similar retail would put the Daytona against the Speedy 321. The 321 slaughters the Daytona here IMO. Even in the bracelet department. The 321 bracelet is incredible. Only negative is lack of micro adjustments.

Ultimately, for me, the number one reason a 321 beats the Daytona is the pure “WISdom” of the watch. I’m obsessed with watches because of the mechanical art pieces they are. It’s amazing to have hundreds of pieces working together to keep time. The 321 is pure “WISdom”, and it’s on display. It’s everything I love about watches in one watch. It is my favorite watch I have ever owned for this reason. The Daytona is a great tool. The Speedy is amazing mechanical art.

Lastly, I’ve recently decided to add my first precious metal piece. One of the top contenders was the Daytona steel dial WG, along with a few other brands. All of the original top contenders, along with the WG Daytona, have been completely forgotten after I tried on the Canopus Speedy on bracelet. I’m obsessed with it now. Absolutely sublime. Added bonus that it will fly under the radar for such an expensive piece. I love that. So, another example of the Speedy beating the Daytona for me. Now if only a NIB 2023 would show up on the secondhand market again.

Better in what way? In SS,
for looks, Daytona > 321 >> 3861
for function, 321 ~ Daytona (close; loses out on legibility, movement finish and maybe some history, but wins on water resistance, vertical clutch, power reserve, automatic) >> 3861
Overall, therefore, perhaps Daytona slightly > 321 but I would love to have both.

Neither has a date window, so I'm not interested in either. If I were interested in a chronograph, it would be the Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Sport. The early Daytonas carry its DNA.
