When you’re almost there yet still so far away!

Hello all!

I have been lurking on TRF for a while now and recently decided to make an account.

I’ll shortly introduce myself: I am 22, full time student, have a pretty cool weekend job and several small business ventures on the side that allow me to live my 20’s in a very beloved way!

Back to what I came here for, I am in the running of buying my first Rolex, a DJ II blue dial has been on my radar for a while now.

I have no trouble managing my money but my question to you guys is: Is the last part of saving the total amount for your watch the hardest? Excitement is kicking in very hard and at this point saving up can’t go fast enough!

I just wanted to share my brief story and maybe hear some tips and tricks from you guys who seem to have Rolexes in abundance!

Congrats and I will say the datejust ll is the perfect choice for a first Rolex. I have owned multiple watches including a submariner, explorer ll, DD 36, and DJ41,and the datejust ll is by far my favorite. It has way more wrist presence then the dj41. The DJll is the perfect watch for a young man in is early 20’s. The best way to save for the last bit of your watch it to take the amount you need left and pretend your just starting to save all over again. You will get there in no time. My best advice since you are going after a older model and if you buy it used make sure to inspect it for over polishing. If you look hard enough you might be able to find one that is new old stock. I paid a little more but having it brand new was worth it. I bought mine at DavidSW. And trust me. Don’t settle for the DJ41. The DJll has way more wrist presence. I have a DJll rhodium diamond dial. I used to own a black DJ41 .

Thank you for the advice, I am going to buy a DJ41 blue dial 2018. Sorry if we did not understand each other. :)

I have been thinking about a Submariner no date for so long. Thay was actually my first choice, until I saw the DJ. The Sub is a very common watch here where I am from and eventhough you buy what YOU like it’s always cooler to have something different.

If that’s true owning one is going to be a blast!

Thank you, it is great motivation to wake up every day and know why you’re doing something.

I find this comment offensive to DJ41 owners.

In no way is buying a watch more to one's tastes "settling."

And yes, I've had both as well.

Saving is good I guess. My approach is to have enough accumulated to where the price of a Rolex is incidental.

It can get a bit tense towards the end. But you won't be able to buy it until you have the funds, so keep dreaming and anticipating. It's not as much fun as having the real watch but it's a good, happy and harmless place to be, particularly when you're approaching the finish line. The right watch is waiting for you. You just haven't crossed paths with it yet.

Welcome to the forum and nice choice of reference. The DJ2 is one of my favourites, especially the blue dial. And yes, the anticipation of the purchase is a huge part of the thrill of ownership. Just remember to post pics when it finally docks on your wrist.

The hardest part for me is actually handing the money over for any new watch!

That pain only lasts a minute until I get my watch in hand and I forget all about what it just cost me :-)

I can definitely see where you’re coming from.

Nonetheless I actually have a ‘Rolex’ savings account, everything I earn with my side business is put towards (a relatively unnecessary luxury product) so that A. It becomes much more of a trophy with a meaning than ‘just’ a watch and B. So that all other income can be spend on the more important things in life.

Absolutely, in fact I secretly applaud someone now when they want a DJ over a ceramic these days.

What an absolute stunner...

You probably had the same feeling I had when I saw this watch when just everything seems to be so perfect and well put together.

I hope when I can finally buy it it’s a match made in heaven, I’ll definitely post pics in about a few months sooner or later hopefully!

My Datejust II white dial with fluted bezel is the only Rolex in my stable and I continue to find great satisfaction in wearing that piece. Happy hunting and I hope your journey takes you to a happy place!

I think the DJll is the better watch and I wrote that when he said he was getting the DJll. I also own a 41. I don’t get you thinking it’s offensive because I think the DJll is a better watch. I have read multiple times how the DJll is not as good as the Dj41. I don’t take it personal. People have different taste. For a younger lad the DJll wins overall. That’s my opinion. I said that thinking he wanted a DJll as he STATED in his post and would be talked into a dj41. So I’m sorry if you were offended. I just know when I flipped one of my Dj41 for a DJll I got a bunch of grief. That’s all. And if you find what I said offensive you should read more post on here. Some saying only people that don’t know about watches buy a DJ and only WIs buy sports models. I don’t take offense. I was comparing 2 DJ. One which is a true 41 mm watch and one that is a 39.5mm watch that wear completely differently. It’s because of this forum I actually have the DJll a chance. I didn’t want a older model. But I thought the DJ41 was actually 41mm but it’s not so that’s why I prefer the DJll. Anyways buy what you like. Wear in good health.

Great watch.

Set a date, set a budget, schedule it all out. IMHO, save double, then buy it.

I personally prefer the DJ41. But the DJ2 is amazing. Just depends on your presence.

Enjoy the anticipation.

As stated anticipation is at least half the fun. I owned the same reference a few years ago and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Congratulations in advance, I hope you get it sooner than later.

The hard part is taking the plunge, because in the back of your mind there is the "what IF". Usually you'll need to see it in person and try it on at ADs like about 10x just to decide whether or not the watch is for you.

I meant the DJ41, unfortunately made a typo. Anyway I can edit the original post?

And if I’d save double my mind would tell to just immediately buy a submariner as well!

I agree but I’m not the one who started talking crap. Some people feel entitled or tough behind a keyboard. I thought this was a site to share and gain information.
