5172G Yay or Nay?

I know that you can’t please everyone. Well, unless you start selling ice cream, and still, you’ll have the lactose intolerant rooting against you. Pateks chronos have had its ups and downs ever since the 5070 was introduced, with a Lemania movement in 1998. Beautiful watch back in the day as and also it was the brand’s first basic chronograph in almost 40 years ago. Has that reference aged well? That's another whole beas of a discussion. Then came the 5170 in 2010 with a series of different variations, and now we have the 5172G. A mix of elegant/casual watch that tries to innovate the Patek manual wind Chrono for the new generation? What do you guys think? Yay or Nay?

I get mine Friday! First Patek in a pool of Journe, Rolex, and a Datograph.

One struggle is that there isn’t much content on this piece. The typical WatchBox review doesn’t exist. The articles are “introducing” articles from the Basel release.

Since I bought it, I’m a yay. I’ll report back in two days time.

The triple stepped lugs on the 5172 and 5320 are really something special.

I love it, in particular the case is spectacular and many small details like the pushers design and dial texture. The only thing though and complaining about the price of a patek is somewhat irrelevant, i feel the msrp for the watch is a tad high maybe by around 15%.

5170J was over 80K when it was released. And that was like, 10 years ago. The first 5170G was $87K. Pricing is still high as you say but not as bad as it used to be.

Yep but that’s why they were very poor sellers and often (still) trades at like 45-55k range...this watch for example in Japan sells for 9mil JPY which is around the same price as a Platinum lange datograph, abit less (msrp). I agree in today’s market the pricing doesn’t seem as outrageous but yeah either way stunning watch though.

Not a chrono guy. But if I was, I’d have this one, and maybe a 39mm ALS Dato.

I would like to believe 5172G is a beautiful watch. It infuses certain level of sportiness as compared to the previous models like 5170 and it seeks to differentiate itself from Lange's 1815 Chrono.

Hence is a Yay for me in terms of design, but given the price is close to Datograph, we are just paying extra for the brand. Hence is a Nay in this aspect.

My two cents worth

Thanks for getting this conversation going, guys. I love everyone's opinions, and I am glad that for most of you is a Yay. I think it is a fantastic piece that is laying some necessary groundwork for what we will see from Patek in the years to come.

All Patek Philippe manual wound chronographs are beautiful. Ref 130, 533, 1463, 5070, 5170 and 5172

i have the 5170G and absolutly love the pulsation dial with breguet numerals on it. such a beautiful design. i believe the 5170 will age well.

the 5172 is also georgous, what is interesting for me in it is that it uses the same numerals as the 5320G and the pilot 5524

I much prefer the 5170.

Just don't like those pushers on the 5172. No the the hands as well.

All Patek chronos are beautiful. 100% I would buy this. The "negativity" received is mainly from how much it differed from the last chrono 5170 (or I should say previous dressier looking models). It will eventually earn its respect.

I really like the 5070G (too bad its 42). The 5170G is beautiful but mainly with the breguet numbers on the black dial or the 5170P.

I prefer the simpler case shape and smaller dimensions of the 5170. Like the dial color and strap of the 5172 though. All things considered I'd likely go 5170P.
