One Watch Guys - Input Requested

I have learned I am truly a one watch guy. Sometimes I think it'd be cool to have multiple pieces, but then I decide I'd rather just have one "grail" watch.

My question is, for the one watch guys, do you have a progression in mind?

For me, my only watch right now is a 16610, next watch on my mind (that I'll trade my 16610 for) is a 116613, and then after owning that for a while, I'd like to own a solid gold Rolex and trade in the 116613 (model TBD).

I'm currently a one watch guy and have no plans for anything to replace it. My new DJ41 ticks all the boxes for me. This is a true first. In the past I seemed to always be looking for something else/more.

Only in that I want to replace my current 16200 with a modern 36mm watch. Either the 116000 36mm OP or the 116200 DJ. Ideally I'd want a Datejust with brushed lugs and bracelet but since that isn't made I'll have to decide between the brushed finish or the date feature...not quite sure which way I'll come down on that but since I find both about equally appealing I think I'll likely end up with the 116000 since it's $1000 cheaper and I basically like them the same.

After that though, not really anywhere I want to go. I suppose in 20 years or so if I find myself flush with cash I'd consider a DD....but right now I'll be happy with a modern 36mm Rolex OP or DJ in steel.

Guess I have simple tastes, haha.

I feel exactly the same way, OP. I have a 114060 and it's all I need. I think it would be awesome to have other pieces and I have had a small collection before.

I don't plan to progress. For me, I feel the closer you go to "grail" i.e. solid gold Rolex, the further away it becomes from being "one watch-able". I guess it depends on how you wear your SS Sub. I wear my watch for everything including scuba. As BADLY as I'd love to have a WG blue Sub...I'd still need another watch cause I just wouldn't want to wear the gold Sub the way I do my SS. I enjoy being able to wear my SS sub the way I do. It means I'm really enjoying it and most of all getting my money's worth. Luckily for me, the normal run o the mill Sub really is my favorite watch. I really enjoy it and see no reason for anything else.

Is this your final watch? I think you can wear it as a one only and I wear mine far more often than my SS one, altho I would still have a SS for the rougher times.

This is actually very true. A SS sub is always a must for everything the grail can't be risked doing!

One watch guy here, I have flipped along the way, but I find the Sub-c to be the perfect watch for me and have no intentions on flipping it.

This is the longest I've had a specific model on my wrist every day, and I'm still not bored with it in any way

I was a one watch guy for the longest time (16600 for 10 years+), and happily to boot - until I ran into this dang forum.

But in that 10+ year span, I've compared my SD to every watch I can find, hoping to trade up. But I've always came back to my 16600. Aesthetics, the feel, the weight, the look and accuracy made this my constant companion.

Good luck on your quest for the ONE!!

Lots of great responses. This gold watch is AMAZING! Grail worthy!

I do think other posters made a lot of sense in saying, there's stuff you feel comfortable doing in a SS Sub v. say a solid gold one (Scuba, etc.). That's a very good point.

One watch will have to be gold.
116718LN GMT or 116618LB Sub
Classy, function, everlasting.

I'd stick with the 16610 long term. You can still talk and read about the wonders of mechanical watches without becoming a collector.

Read this: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/op...-one-watch-guy

p.s. fwiw, I personally have no interest in gold sports watches.

Thanks for sharing! I've seen that before. Such a great article. There is some stigma in me which says keeping a stainless watch all those years, and beating it to a pulp like this guy would be so cool.

Unfortunately if your a TRF member it's next to impossible.

There is absolutely no way I can be a one watch guy.
I sometimes change up my watch mid day.
Love having a selection.

Yeah...you lost me at "one watch guy."

I've heard tell of the legends, but never actually come face to face with such a thing.

i don't believe there a single one watch member here; maybe one rolex but not one watch.

if we all look in a drawer or under a sofa we'll find a swatch or timex or even an old seiko somewhere we forgot about.

I'm a one-watch guy myself :-)

The next one has to be compelling enough to replace the existing one and should have long-term staying power. Nothing qualifies at this point (fortunately) :-)

This is so true...The other day I found an old Citizen Eco Drive I had squirreled away and hadn't worn in years.

I've always been a one watch guy. Everytime I want something new, I would sell off my current one. Never really felt a need for a "collection".

Maybe when wearing a watch on each wrist become more mainstream...

Also a one watch guy. The only watch I'm wanting with my SubC ND is a very nice example of Red Sub 1680.

Someday I will be a one watch guy. I've given myself the goal of getting 3 Rolexes with the intention of passing two on too my girls when they're old enough. At that point, it'll be one watch for me. I'd thought about holding off and just saving so they can pick their own. But I wonder where the sentimentality is in that, plus that requires me to be sure beyond any doubt I will make it that long which none of us can do... maybe I will just let my pieces be piggy banks to trade for theirs in the future? Who knows
