Under the radar!? Why?

Does anyone else find this expression annoying? My feeling is that if you want to be truly under the radar, don't wear a watch. Don't take this as a criticism, I'm reflecting on my feelings only.

When I’m trying to stay under the radar, it’s usually when I’m under the weather!!

Seriously, no, the expression does not concern me in the slightest.

Depends on the situation.
For example, I probably wouldn't wear a solid gold AP or Patek to a family picnic, or a funeral. Under the radar just means being discreet.

I prefer to go under the radar, even when I'm over the moon with my new purchase.

I started a thread not too long ago about a
very similar topic ... I personally think it’s
pointless trying to be under the radar wearing a
LUXURY watch SS, TT or PM!!!
Wear what you like and forget about it !!!

I find it a wonderful expression.
Lends itself to a great mental visual.

The term is definitely contradictory.
Folks want to wear a 8-50K or more watch on their wrist. BUT, they are paranoid of anyone noticing it and afraid of being robbed.
I agree, don't wear any watch, period. Problem solved.

In many circle of friends the cheapest Rolex for one is a few months salary for another.

Or

In many companies there is a huge disparity in pay between employee types.

Nothing wrong with liking nice things but not wanting to flaunt it or create ill fillings in others. It doesn’t matter if it is the other persons “issue” if you are true friends you will feel for their feelings and sometimes you may want your watch to be “under their radar”

For me I thought my Z-Blue would be “under the radar” but I have had it noticed more than any other watch I have ever onwed. No one knows it is a Rolex but I do get asked “nice watch, what is that?” I have just started answering “it is a Milgauss”. If they know what that means then I dont have to be “under the radar” anymore.

For the record I did not buy it to be “under the radar” I just thought it would be. I was wrong . . .

I find your use of the term " don't wear a watch" much more offensive. But I hope to make it better by once again quoting you; "don't take this as a criticism".

Everyone has things that set them off. Yours is “under the radar”. Mine is.....ah forget it. Doesn’t matter.

Nope.

I find the flashy, in-your-face oversized pie tins that some like to wear on skinny arms much more annoying.

I’ve used it, but I’m not necessarily a fan.

And I tend to agree with you. Sure, there are true blue horological affectionados on here. But my assumption is that many of us simply obsess a bit over one if the only pieces of accoutrement that men wear.

I love watches. But I like them for what they are. And often times they are not under the radar.

I’m ok with that. These days, I’m not necessarily too concerned with the radar in general.
