Retirement apartment in Veytaux, Switzerland!

So my wife and I are looking around for an apartment in Switzerland and we came upon one with this bathroom.

She said she loves the "romantic flame" to the right of the toilet!

I do love the country in this girl!

That is a pretty cool, albeit minimalist, design. Would love to see more pics of the apartment! Retirement apartment in Switzerland sounds amazing.

Actually guys that romantic flame is actually a Kleenex dispenser with yellow Kleenexes in it.

My wife thought it was the flame! She keeps me entertained for sure! She is also one of the smartest people I have ever met, but still has a country streak in her! Love that!

We have a fire place like that, very James Bond but not very practical. looks very cool, just don't drop a tissue or a white hand towel you probably will never find it again.

If you don't mind saying, I'm curious about the logistical hurdles (immigration/medical etc) of maintaining a retirement place in Switzerland. (Assuming you are a US citizen and not Swiss.)

Curious what the rest of the place looks like.

I will retain my US Citizenship and will use it for a seasonal home and as a winter rental for skiers via a property management firm.

As far as living in Switzerland full time, you will likely have to document that you are independently wealthy and will never need employment in Switzerland and will need to sign off that you will never apply for any public assistance among other hoops that need to be jumped through. The Swiss have locked down immigration to a science. One of the reasons they have the lovely country they do. It's a country that is akin to a private club.

If you "know someone" that can pull strings for you politically then all the red tape can be truncated. Also if you work for a global company that has a presence in Switzerland or better yet has its corporate HQ there then the company can sponsor you. Even then there are doglegs and gotchas that can cause issues.

It all depends on how you look at it, Paul. Right if you're looking south, left if you're looking north. Not sure what you would do if you're going west to east. Go straight, I suppose.

We have researched living in Switzerland for the better part of 10 years and have a good network of expats that live there. All is good.

The price is definitely right!

Any news on the apartment? Pulling the trigger? Keep us updated. I visited Switzerland 10 years ago and it was a very, very lovely country. My family and I visited many countries and Switzerland surprised me, unexpectedly was one of my favorites to visit.

These things go very slowly and typically they want foreigners to do things that are not acceptable in the US such as putting down a preposterous amount of earnest money. Looks like this one will fall through. You have to be careful when purchasing anything overseas when they want 10 times the earnest money as would be typically asked in the US. They want your money and the hope it will fall through. They keep the money and any type of litigation is so expensive that it is not worth the ride.

If you ever think of purchasing something like this, be sure and ask how many times the home or apartment has been escrowed and fallen through. If it is more then once or twice then you are likely looking at a seller that is only trying to keep earnest monies. Another signal is that these types of sellers will typically only advertise apartments / homes on websites in the US or other countries not governed by EU rules.

Be careful.

We will keep looking.
