this gets into the quality of life vs quantity of life argument. Longer doesn't mean better.

My grandma is in great shape and in her late 90's. She isn't going on vacation or doing anything particularly enjoyable though. So why wait until you are super old to retire if you don't have to. Your lifestyle is pretty sedentary regardless of your health at that age. No thanks.

My definition is I will retire when I don't need to work anymore. On target for 55.

But I won't stop working. I'll never stop working. I will probably retire from running companies and move on to saving animals, but I will always do something. But I won't need to work for money. That will be retirement for me.

I don’t plan to retire. Rather, I plan to change careers to something that suits my later years. Such as oil painting or sport fishing. I do plan to do that as soon as possible though.

Exactly, if I'm still around at 90, but nothing more than the walking dead, then what's the point? It about quality not quantity, especially if everyone I know is dead and gone or I simply don't fit into life anymore!

Retired from a civil service job at 42, worked full time 5 additional years, now do freelance work 5 or 6 days a month. If you can afford to do it, don't wait.

I'm pretty far from retirement age-wise, but my hope is that at 65 I'll be doing something I love enough, and be financially secure enough, to not have to retire in the traditional sense. Maybe transition into a career that involves more mentoring and get away from career advancement and the daily grind, but, health permitting, I can't see ever just quitting and spending all day playing golf, but who know how my priorities will change over the coming decades.

Maybe it's just my screwed up American work ethic talking- who knows.

Nobody can (should) make this one for you.
It requires a lot of self-examination as sometimes what you need is a different job, not retirement.
