Suggestions on a sports watch
I'm sure what the answer will be from most, but I'll ask anyway. I have always liked collecting watches, and was buying Tag and Hamilton level stuff. I just made the jump to a DJII, and now want a new weekend sports watch to compliment it. Long story short is I love the Breitling Superocean 42 and the Explorer II. With that said after just buying my first Rolex my budget is a little shot. I know very little about Breitling watches, but is the Superocean a good fill in until I can get an Explorer II down the road?(most likely several years).

Yes it's a fine watch but you're better off saving for the Explorer.

I really like the Superocean and nearly bought one a few times, but it's halfway in cost to a BNIB EXP2 and id rather keep saving for that :)

Pick up a G-Shock or a Seiko and save your money for the Explorer. Buying the super ocean means you have to save up that much more to get to the Explorer you really want.

If i may say, the Breitling you posted is a "nice" watch but your DJ2 is really great for any occasion. Dress, Casual and even as a swimming watch (I can't stand when people remove their Rolex to swim, even if it is a DJ)
If you want to add something, now that you got to the Rolex level, I say save and add another Rolex! If you check our classifieds you can get a great deal on an EXP II. I recently saw a black dial 42mm going for about $5600 |

Save for the ROLEX. You'll never regret it. And...you may change your mind on the model for one you like more.

Get the Breitling if you want the watch... Don't get it as a place holder for another watch, as it will just cost you more money and delay you getting what you really want.

I appreciate all the response! I honestly have no idea what the lifespan on the Superocean would be. I really like the rubber strap look but I am guessing I could do something similar with an aftermarket option on an Explorer II or Sub?

Take it from me- I was a habitual flipper and have gone through about 10-12 watches in the last 2 years. I couldn't keep a watch for more than 4 months and jumped from TAG, Oris, Breitling, Lum-tec, Panerai, etc before finally landing on Rolex. Flipping ended as soon as I picked up the Sub C. It's been over a year and I still love the damn thing! It ended being a gateway drug to my GMT BLNR I just picked up
I say be patient and save up. The SO 42mm will end up being a band aid for what you really want. It was for me I went from this: To this! |

Nope, it doesn't. Some here own only Rolex and no other brands, some here own a little bit of everything. As for me, I own a Rolex and a G-Shock.

I'd skip that Breitling and save as well. Find something pre owned for the time between now and when you can afford the Explorer.

As people have said before, buy what you like.
I personally really like the SuperOcean and my brother has that exact same watch. It's nice, feels solid with a rugged look, to be honest I've come close a couple of times to picking it up myself, but would rather save some $$$ and get a new Rolex. Just my 2 pence........ |

I know nothing about Breitling watches, I wil say that first off. The one you pictured looks great though.
With that said, I would also advise against a "place holder" watch. It is not at all hard to find a great deal on an Explorer II-both the newer 42mm version or the former 16570 40mm type. |

Nothing against the Breitling, but I'd save for the ExpII on resale alone. I'm thinking this is a factor because you mentioned the SO42 as a fill-in until you can swing the Rolex, making it sound like you'd consider flipping it when you're ready for the Explorer2. I think you'll find that you will have to take it on the chin pretty hard when you sell the Breitling.
Both nice looking watches but there's no comparison imho. The Explorer 2 is the nicer piece - again my humble $0.02

I have both the 116300 DJII and the Superocean 42, amongst other bad boys from Rolex, Omega, Panerai, and Cartier.
I have to say that the Superocean is a great watch, especially with a custom sharkskin leather strap. It keeps incredible time but has a Breitling modified ETA movement. If you can live with that, then why not get it if it calls to you. SO42.jpg

If you have your heart set on another Rolex, save for it. Or possibly look for a pre-owned Breitling???Also, don't lock in to a certain brand, there are many great watch brands out there besides Rolex.

while I am a fan of many watches, I own 1 rolex, 2 brietling, 1 omega.. I love my Brietling more than any of them. Coming on this Forum and asking about other brands always gets you more Rolex answers than any. FWIW, my wonderful Brietling cost nearly as much as a Sub or GMT. I honestly think I got more watch for the money. image.jpg
