Regarding the original question posted in this thread - Most important, interesting and/or collectable GMT? - I would like to offer my perspective.

Clearly the most important and interesting GMT would have to be the first - the GMT 6542. Nice examples are almost unobtainable and pricey. Most have not weathered the ages well with many having replaced or aftermarket parts. It's a great watch if you are fortunate enough to find a nice example within your budget.

The most collectable GMT based on my experience would have to be the GMT 1675. While debatable on which year or dial finish is the most collectable or sought after, clearly, based on my experience, it would have to be the matte dial version from 1966-1979. The GMT 16750 with the quick-set, matte dial, is a close second and is always in demand. It was produced from 1979 for approximately five years.

The remainder of collectible GMTs, BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE, are:

1) GMT II 16700 A great, true, quick-set GMT with sapphire crystal and produced in limited quantities from 1989-1999. (Everyone should have one in their collection and very undervalued in my opinion. Nice examples aren't easily found.)

2) GMT 16710 Many examples of this model for sale. Made in much larger quantities than the GMT 16700. Another great example of the sapphire models.

3) GMT GMT II 16760 A great watch made for around seven years. Due to age, many appear for sale with dial issues. If you find a nice example, buy it.

4) GMT 16750 glossy dial Little demand for these, which I can not explain.

Anyone wanting more background on the various GMT models are welcome to review a thread in the Reference Section I posted a while back on these iconic models.

I’d really hate to question Springer, who is a true expert on all things GMT, but I believe the 16700 is a GMT ( and not a GMT II). Certainly, mine is

Lol...for the astute reader that caught my typos, it should read GMT 16700 and GMT II 16710.

It looks pretty good from that one pic. Gilt dials need to be seen in person to really judge condition though unless the photographer does their best to show it in all lights.

The hands appear to be replacements. Not sure about the bezel - this is a particular style on this early 1675 model. Date disc appears to be a white service type. None of which are massive issues if the dial is excellent condition.

Good luck!

Not sure why my post above has the wrong pic. This is the watch I refer to.

Insert is correct in my opinion and it looks to be the early type bezel. Hands are correct old style but probably redone or a new set.

Here is my old one with later service hands. The minute hand is much shorter than the one above.

Well, I love all the GMT Masters. The 4 digits look amazing, but I am new to this area of collecting and have not ventured back that far in time as yet. I realise this is probably not the early GMT most are looking to see, but here is my contribution.

My choice for this thread is the 16700. Same thinking as Springer here:

1) Last of the GMT Masters
2) Relatively few were sold (1989-1999)
3) Quickset date
4) Sapphire crystal
5) 3 choices of bezel (Pepsi, Coke & Black)
6) 2 choices of bracelet (Jubilee & Oyster)
7) 2 Dial variants (Tritium & Luminova)
8) Practical as a daily wearer
9) Today priced similar to a current new GMT2

I went for one of the first one’s made. An R serial made in 1988 for the 1989 launch. Have aquired all the bezel options.…..just need a jubilee bracelet now! Having original papers is the ideal for many, but I have 2 RSC service papers instead and it is still under warranty, so this gives a newbie like me piece of mind in an area that can be a minefield for the inexperienced.

These early 16700s (R & L serial I believe) came with the open 6 & 9 date wheel, which is a feature I enjoy

I scored a super nice tritium 16700 Pepsi full set from Michael M about a year and a half ago. I love it. The only thing that would have made it better is if it was an A or U series which has SWISS at the bottom...

I have a 16710 and this 1675. Love the radial dial but still wonder why they were produced in the mid 70s for such a short period.

Hard to make a list but let’s try.. Things that will change the list is unique features such as a tropical dial or double name such as Tiffany, SyL, etc. Military watches as UAE eagle, FAP or blueberry bezels are also difficult to place in. Gold versions are of course also interesting and a story itself.

Assuming condition is perfect:

Early 6542 with long hour hand and red depth gilt
Later 6542 gilt
First OCC dial 1675 gilt
Double swiss non-chapter gilt
Normal chapter ring with underline gilt
Normal chapter ring without gilt
Standard non-chapter underline gilt
Last series gilt
Radial matte
Everything else matte 1675
Matte 16750
WG 16750
Sapphire models

I am probably forgetting something and I am sure not everyone agrees. There are so many configurations.. Anything top condition gilt will make most collectors superhappy.

Prices are impossible to say. Great 6542’s with perfect bakelite are 100k+ and great gilt 1675’s start at 30-35k but can go much, much higher depending on example and configuration.
What is a “normal chapter ring without gilt”? Do you mean without underline?

I added the gilt to all lines as the TS asked in his first comment. When I saw this mistake it was too late to edit. All watches I mention before the radial matte are gilt dial watches.

Initially it said:

Normal chapter ring with underline
Normal chapter ring without

So it meant without underline.

I have a 16700 A serial Swiss dial bought new in August 99 , which probably makes it one of the last of the GMT masters

The more 1675 and later I see, the more I love them.

But sorry, the Hawai 1675 are still speachless...
