'73 GMT in a junk drawer

I was visiting a friend a few days ago and he was complaining about having broken the bracelet on his Timex watch. He was trying to decide if he should replace the bracelet or just wear one of his old watches. I asked him what else he had and he started digging through a junk drawer. After much clacking and crashing of metal he emerged with a handful of about six watches. He tossed the pile onto the kitchen table and right in the middle was this beauty.

He's had it since 1973 and it hit the junk drawer when he yanked the crown completely out if it about 25 years ago. He screwed it back in and into the junk drawer it went. He did mention having broken the crystal sometime in the years before that. He took it to a dealer to have them replace the crystal and replace that "old faded bezel." Luckily, the dealer talked him out of replacing the bezel.

I about cried. And no; he wouldn't sell it to me.

Yeah: no kidding. I told him I'd buy it from him for whatever he wanted. Nope. So I told his wife I'd buy it from HER when he croaks.

It just stays in the junk drawer but he won't sell it? That's strange.

He may be keeping it for sentimental reasons but if so he should at least get it serviced, and working, it is a shame to keep a watch like that in a drawer in disrepair!!

not really. Try watching those junkyard find TV shows. Those people have all kinds of stuff most of which they haven't seen for decades and forgot they even had, and when someone asks to buy it then all of a sudden its special. That mentality is weird to me, but its common.

It's amazing he remember he's had the watch since 1973. I have a hard time remembering some of the purchase dates on my watches -- thank goodness for Excel spreadsheets.

It does have sentimental value to him. Case back was engraved when it was given to him.

Case back engraving says 1973. It was given to him then.

Offer to trade him for one without that "faded old bezel". Tell him you'll even get him the one with gold indices and a sapphire crystal!!

Apologies as only the brits will probably get this....

Well every time I see the Watchfinder advert where the guy pulls a near perfect sub from behind an old paint tin in his on his garage shelf, I instantly turn to my other half and say who the hell has a watch like that on a shelf/draw that they just “forgot” they have ??

Well this answers my question by the looks of it.

Wow - that really is amazing!
I agree with Melanotaenia - it really should be sent to RSC to be brought back to life and enjoyed.
Crying shame to keep it disregarded in such a manner.
Cool watch & story non the less

be happy for him

I'd smile, and remind him that it would be good to get it working again, at every opportunity to do so without becoming a pest... I do wonder what else he has amongst his hoard of valued objects, typically one that is secret or carefully guarded........

I just called him and convinced him to at least move it from his junk drawer to his safe until he decides what to do with it. Someone from another forum said it may be worth $20k!?!? That tidbit made him rethink the junk drawer landing zone. A few years ago he asked me to look at an old revolver he was thinking of selling. Said it was probably worth a couple of hundred $. I helped him sell his mint unfired stainless Colt Python for several thousand $$$. He has a lot of “stuff.”

Oh... and he was SOOO happy to tell me he took one of the old Timex’ in and got a battery yesterday. He’s thrilled to have a running Timex on his wrist today. Shaking my head....

Lmao.. sounds like a cool guy in his own way.

What makes me shake my head is the comment about moving his watch from the draw to his SAFE.

So he has a safe and leaves that watch in a junk draw.....brilliant.

I would love to see what the hell he has in his safe in that case.

He really is a great guy. He’s seriously one of the most been-there-done-that guys I’ve ever known. Just turned 70 and has nearly seen it all. Very knowledgeable about some very obscure things. But obviously not about watches.

Makes you wonder how many others like him are out there... watches we all drool over and to them it’s an old watch.
