Tritium Pearls on eBay

Dear forum members,

I contacted a seller on eBay late last year about a sold listing of some tritium peals in the off chance that he had some more in stock. He replied saying that he didn't, and would get back to me when he did.

I recieved an email from him yesterday informing me that he got 5 pearls in and asking whether or not I was interested. I picked one up as a spare, and believe he has 4 left.

He's asking a very reasonable 100USD + 15USD shipping, here's the link:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Rol...c/273020783144

The seller states they are authentic in his listing, but I've yet to recieve mine, so I can't personally confirm this. However, I thought it perhaps better to share the link now, rather than when it arrives as I don't expect these to last long at this price.

Hope this post will be of some help to our "pearl-less" brethren

They are painted on the inside whether original or not.

I have some for sale that are genuine. Those look like garbage in my opinion. Make sure you take a UV light to it when you get it.

I appreciate the input fellas. Please see below for my responses/follow up questions, if I may:

Beelzy: I asked the seller for close up pictures of each pearl and noticed there were infact differences in colour between them (from egg shell to a warm yellow). I agree with your train of thought though; 5 pearls, all of the same colour would present as a big red flag.

Springer: How are you able to tell from such low res photos? I'm not challenging you, but rather want to learn how you came to that conclusion and what the tells are.

v.lats97nsx: The tritium in the second photo you attached does seem to have the same type of texture one would expect when inspecting original tritium lume plots up close. PM sent.

Thanks again, all, for the feedback. I've sent the seller a message - hopefully it reaches him before it ships.

Cheers,
Lyndon

Looking at it from the open part at the bottom, it looks very sloppy...like paint. None of my pearls looked like that.

I believe they are fake - FlightMaster from Aus had these a few years back - insisted they were real - I believe those were fake too - look like the same ones.

I had my local RSC fit a luminova pearl to my 1680. It cost me $50 for the part and work. My plan is to drill it out and fill it with paint myself, it will be both cheaper and more authentic than these i believe, they do look a bit different.

Surprises me how many people will go without a pearl or take a luminova one on a 10k+ watch

In my case I will never sell it and it cost my father something like $100 when he bought it new for my brother. Most of these old Submariners are from a time before Rolex entered the luxury watch segment, they were just very very good and robust tool watches. That is how I still use them.

Springer and v.lats97nsx: Good to know, thanks for sharing.

Although this thread didn’t serve its intended purpose, I’m sure your responses will be helpful to those, like myself, who are still learning.

Cheers,
Lyndon
