36mm is still my preferred watch size. I do love the DDII though.

Can't really say much from your pictures..
I will say that generally, the 41mm DJ's and DD's look too big on most people.. They are just too large as a dress watch..

+1. It's impossible to say with those pics.

I think DD2/DJ2 look very nice as casual watches. The 36mm varieties are better dressy watches (ie, long sleeve shirts).

It's not an either/or situation.
I'm wearing my 36mm DJ today and tomorrow, I may be wearing my 40mm Sub or my 36mm Explorer. All three look great on my 7.75" wrist and I have other watches that are larger and smaller that look good, too, although I never wear my 34mm, anymore, since it bit the dust. Forget about numbers and judge not only by look, but feel, also. After awhile wearing my Sub, the DJ and the Explorer feel very pleasant.

Yes and No IMO. The 36 looks dramatically smaller but I think the 40-42 is perfect in a sports model... Dress watch on the other hand I personally would stick with the classic 36mm

36 all the way, sooner or later like platform women's shoes most of are going to wake up and ask why. On most humans a 40 Sub as a sports watch is plenty big. Leave the sun dials to the yard. I did travel on a plane with the biggest human being I have ever seen. he was a massive polynesian and he had a 35mm face seiko or the like and he had as much skin either side of the watch as the watch was wide, but that is the exception in my thinking. If it is intended as a fun sports watch then by all means go for 42 as a dress watch the tradition DJ with a nice bezel is in my opinion the way to go.

Issues of fashion aside, I always think practicality tends to dictate what is 'right'.
If you have a big wrist - say 7 1/2inches plus then a 42mm watch looks in good proportion whereas on a small wrist a big watch looks ungainly. You'd have to have a really big wrist for a 36mm watch to look "too small". Forget fashion - it comes, it goes.

I tried on a 36 and 41 DJ the other day and I have 7.5 wrists, I thought the 36 felt really comfortable and it's the one I'd go for

There is a reason rolex is marketing 36mm to women.... 36mm at best is a unisex size!

I think they look fine in pictures. However, pictures can be deceiving; I think 36mm look better in pictures but 41 looks better in person. Once you're used to wearing a 41mm the 36 feels like a toy watch. The bezel on the 41 is also much more interesting and looks a lot better. However, I'm also 6'6" 230 lbs so my point of view is probably different than the average 5'10" male.
I'd actually like to see pictures with your watch from further out (showing your whole body) to get a real perspective. You should also keep in mind when looking at the responses to your post that the 36mm has been around for a lot longer so you're probably going to get a majority of responses from 36mm owners and people always over value what they're familiar with.
