New movement for the Rolex SkyDweller? (9001 vs 9002?))

From Hodinkee:

"The Sky-Dweller is now equipped with calibre 9002, an evolution of calibre 9001. This new movement includes the Chronergy escapement and is fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring, made in a paramagnetic alloy. The power reserve of caliber 9002 extends to approximately 72 hours."

The previous movement already had all that. If you compare the descriptions on Rolex website, both movements are identical - see screenshots. So what was really changed if anything?

Would like to know, seems like minor tweaks.

Well, the price remained the same. If Rolex changed something, they would have used the opportunity to raise the prices. They didn't. Did the original movement have any issues they had to address? I am now aware of any.

My first release SS SkyD was a daily beater for over a year, no issues. Super solid timepiece! That's why i want Rolex to make a perpetual calendar

The 9001 never had the Chronergy escapement when it was first introduced as the 9001 came out in 2012 and it was another 3 years till Rolex developed the Chronergy escapement. It did already have a 72 hour PR though.

Thanks, I thought it was already there. I am shocked that Rolex did not use that opportunity to raise the price. It's now like the watches will be sitting on the shelves...

Just found the press release:

"The Sky-Dweller is now equipped with calibre 9002. An evolution of calibre 9001, this new movement includes some of the major innovations that Rolex has brought to its movements, including the Chronergy escapement."

Btw, Rolex does not even mention the Chronergy escapement on their website:

Weird.

There is also a difference on the face of the dial. New 9002 sky dwellers have two small crowns at 6 o clock on the dial, whereas 9001 sky dwellers have NO crowns at 6 o clock on the dial. This in the only physical difference on the face of the watch.

The 9002 began manufacture in 2023, and there are a lot of deceptive sellers on Chrono24 advertising “2023” Sky Dwellers which were actually manufactured in 2022 but SOLD in 2023 with 2023 as the date on the papers, but they in fact have the old 9001 movement. So when buying a sky dweller from a gray, just because they say it’s a 2023 does NOT mean it is ACTUALLY a 2023 with the 9002 movement, it means it was only sold in 2023. This is a huge red flag and can be verified by zooming in on the dial.

For reference numbers, the new 2023 sky dweller with 9002 movement carries reference 336934 whereas the old version carries the old reference 326934.

Here is a photo of the two crowns at 6 o clock where it says Swiss made. The old 2022 manufactured and prior sky dwellers do NOT have this. In this photo they look like dots because of the low resolution, but they are actually tiny crowns.

And here is the OLD 9001 movement skydweller dial with NO crowns at 6 o clock:

The biggest change IMO is the new 9002 movement is more resistant to magnetism. The older 9001 movement was very easily magnetized and caused problems for many owners, so increasing the resistance to magnetism was one of the major benefits of the new movement.

The reference number, dial, case/lugs, crown, seconds hand, movement…maybe more?

The bracelet reference numbers are unchanged.

I’m not so sure about that.

Afraid that's not true.
