Seamaster planet ocean VS Submariner date

Seamaster Planet Ocean (2201.50.00) or Rolex Submariner date (16610)
Well, these 2 watches are looking great... Please argue!
Up to now, I love both, I am just thinking Omega is a lot cheaper for a great quality but since I need glasses to read, the Rolex cyclops looks really helpful. But is Rolex or Omega the most accurate? What about the autonomy? What about the value? And what about fashion? I feel like a novice on politic having to vote for the first time... and ready to watch the debate between the two main candidates...

I would have the PO over the Sub....
It is argued the Sub is an "iconic" watch....and probably has some merit. But in terms of aesthetics PO wins for me hands down.
Rolex will cost you much more...and hold it's value much better.
Also, if you want the prestige associated with Rolex then the Sub is hard to beat.
In terms of "fashionable"?.....well....both are for different reasons. The PO is a much newer/contemporary design IMO...the Sub...ageless...classic...instantly recognizable.

Good luck

That's true. So true than I like better a Sub at 5K than some luxury watches at 180K (Paket Philippe)... and even about Rolex, if I like very much the GMT Master II, I have the feeling the Sub is more iconic...

this thread (only a few down from your thread) may help with your Q&A

imo & as dalip have already suggested, Sub is the iconic Rolex watch and it is very popular amongst the WIS "group"

for me, the PO is a handsome looking piece. i love it. the non chrono 25xx co-axial movemnet has been pretty much trouble free

it was a touch choice not to get both and since i love green and orange colours....... ended up with an LV and an Orangy 42mm

Tough call for me as I have a PO and am aspiring to get a Sub date as soon as the Basel 2010 "results" are out.
The PO is a great watch, incredibly well-designed/ incredibly well made- also very readable while driving in city traffic: very important to aging eyes!
But is it a classic design like the sub- will it still be around say 25 or 50 years from now in the same form?
Now where did I keep that crystal ball?

To be brutally honest I actually prefer the PO.....
but as my watches will be 'heirloom pieces' I'm sticking with Rolex.

I've owned both watches, and I definitely prefer the Planet Ocean.
True, the Rolex will hold it's value much better because, heck, it's a Rolex ! But as far as looks, quality, robustness, and modernness, I'd go for the PO. Much better bracelet, and has better "wrist presence" if you will. Plus, you can buy almost THREE Planet Oceans for the cost of one Sub. (with arguably the same quality as a SMP, or PO). So, ya, I'd get the Planet Ocean. Much better Lume as well.

Price not being an issue, I'd get the Sub. It is the most elegant presentation of a dive watch available. However, I own a PO because it costs half as much as a Sub, it's in my view the best Sub alternative on the market (without being too much of a Sub copy), and I actually prefer the looks of the PO. I hope to get a Sub for a special birthday some day.

I own the PO in 42mm and it is a great watch. I just purchased the Submariner but the 16610LV (Green Insert on the bezel). The PO is heavier, well designed and the co-axial movement is very good. The PO has the AR (anti-reflective) coating on the underside as well as the surface. This is nice for readability but poor as far as potential scratches. The bracelet is nice but scratches (desk diving) easily. The PO wears heavier and does not fit under cuffs well as it sits higher, about 15mm. The PO has the helium release valve which is visible unlike the Rolex Seadweller or Breitling Superocean which has it built in. I personally prefer the valve built in as it looks cleaner. The PO is very nice but if I had to do it over again I would have probably purchased the Seamaster Pro instead.
If you go Omega you will get a very good watch at a great price. I think if you buy a Sub, you will get a great, time tested, classic timepiece. Good luck.

One thing that's guaranteed to happen every time one of these threads gets started is that heated opinions are going to be posted on both sides.

The Sub is a great timepiece, one that's been tested by decades of history. You'll hear that it's not robust (it is) and that the caliber 3135 movement can't hang with newer ones like the Omega co-axial. I'll hold up 20 years of history to refute that notion. It's a hardy, accurate and proven movement. Really, outside of frivilous ornamentation, it's hard to find a movement anywhere in the watch world that's better, in terms of durability and accuracy. It's a workhorse and inspires great confidence.

You'll also hear that the bracelet is cheap-feeling and not that strong. Again, I'll cite decades of flawless performance as evidence that it's plenty robust.

The Planet Ocean is a terrific and modern take on the diver. It looks great, is built well, and has that newer co-axial movement. The co-axial works very well, but it has less than ten years of history to its name, so the jury is still out on its long-term durability. I don't own one yet (but will), but do have an SMP. Omega makes a fine watch, robust, durable and proven. They also represent a great value. That can be a good thing and a bad thing, depending on whether you ever want to sell one.

The ultimate solution? Get both!

depends on what your preference is

for me, if this is my only watch, then i would go with the PO because of:

- much better lume
- higher build spec (600m + manual HEV)
- looks great on bracelet or OEM strap
- the co-axial movement (semi unique movement) + rotor is running on ball bearing
- more solid bracelet and clasp
- lower price means i have money left for my other toys
- less clones and look-alike out there (legal or illegal)

I own both. A 45.5mm PO and a Serti Submariner.
Dont get a Submariner...Everyone has a steel Submariner. Heck even I have a Serti Sub and am starting to get
irritated by how common a steel Sub is these days. Get a Planet Ocean instead. Newer, fresher, more/better size options, and perhaps a better watch/movement.

If I were buying a steel diver watch then the Planet Ocean by a huge margin.

lol Eric mate....

I'm tempted to keep both my Quartz SMP's (I have a black & a blue) for "beaters" 'cos if I DID get a 45.5mm PO (which I adore.... ) I'm scared the Rolex's would feel too small when I wore them!?

I pick up my GMTIIc next month & will probably end up e-baying the SMP's though & getting a G-Shock or something for work.... Maybe the surplus cash'd upgrade the DJII to a beautiful two-tone like yours eh?!

Yeah Dan, might as well have different varities in your collection. Have you considered the 42mm instead of the 45.5mm.

As for the.... "don't get the sub" comment, wait for a few more years and let's see how many POs will "flood" the market ;-)

If you get a 45.5MM PO your Sub WILL feel small. Its not a bad thing but I have noticed when I put my Sub on after wearing the PO, it feels like a mid size watch. The Sub feels smaller than 40mm. It just depends what you like. There is no bad choice here.

In my opinion.... & please bear in mind that I say this only having tried them both on & I don't actually own either of them (yet!)....

I think a lot of it's down to the weight of the PO & it just feels ........ "heftier?!"

Love 'em both though so no 'loser' as such IMO....

My thoughts:

PO
More modern style, great lume, great bracelet, feels hefty, lower cost.

Sub
Classic model/looks, Rolex "status", resale, history.

Both are great watches, but for me, the money I could save by getting the PO gave it a far better "value" rating. If you shop around you can probably get the PO for half the price of a Sub... money which could be spent on getting a second watch! : - )

For me the Sub wins hands down. Someone said before that they are irrated by how common the sub is.... I know its a popular watch but doesnt that say something?? (its also not that popular in the real world)

You can get a PO in your average run of the mill jewlers so I will bet that you will soon be irrated with how common the PO becomes.

I've no doubt in my mind that its a good watch and the price will always be its trump card against a rolex. The co ax movement defo sounds like it does the job but isn't that just Omega striving to attempt to catch up to Rolex, the sub movments have been top knotch for a countless number of years.

Its kinda annoying how people think the PO and SMP must have better bracelets and claps just because they are heavier!! Surely the design of these two parts are paramount in how they perform. Rolex designed a great bracelt and clasp that have stood the test of time.
