I would tend to go with Omega just because I like their designs much better. But Breitling is a worthy brand and does excellent work. Another reason I like Omega is their development of the new co-axial escapement (actually invented by George Daniels) which cuts down on maintenance. I haven't heard what Breitling is going to do when ETA cuts off shipment of their movements to companies outside of Swatch. Breitling does a good job upgrading their ETA movements but I don't know if they plan to develop their own or buy Sellita movements--it costs most companies more than a million dollars to develop a new movement, so I am guessing they will go with Sellita, but who knows? In the end, this to me gives Omega a slight edge. However, you could buy either brand depending on your personal likes and dislikes and you won't go wrong either way.

Omega gets my vote. I was recently speaking with a 2nd generation watchmaker, who is authorized to work on Rolex. That means that he has met Rolex's requirements, and is able to purchase parts/accessories from Rolex and has an active parts account with Rolex, which many watchmakers do NOT have.

Anyway, he works on many watches and told me that he is not impressed with Breitlings, and does not recommend Breitling. Based on his knowledge of the inner workings of watches, and my perceived value of Omega, I would definitely vote for Omega.

Omega...!

Hi there!

OMEGA (Ωμέγα) hands down!!!

The achievements and the history behind the company are amazing
and way too numerous to list here...
The Speedmaster and the whole story behind NASA and the so-called
"Moonwatch" is just one chapter of Omega's history!!

Couple that with the fact that Omega is now again heading back
(or has actually arrived) to being a "manufacture" again...
(just look at the marvelous movement that powers the "Hour Vision"
model for example or the development of Daniels' Co-Axial escapement
in general)...

Generations of Seamasters, Speedmasters, Constellations, DeVilles,
Dynamics (and, and, and...) speak volumes, I think...

To make a long comment short: there's more substance (and "soul")
inside an Omega than there is... inside a Breitling...

Just my 2c...

Both Omega and Breitlings for me. I love both watches as I own a the 2531.80 and the Chrono Avenger.

Seamaster Chronos are the ultimate sportwatch since you can use the chronos underwater - either the 7750 or FP33xx movements, both are great! The FP33xx movement however is more accurate.

I love my Breitling! Does Omega certify EVERY single watch as COSC?

Yes, today all Breitlings are COSC-rated, but IMHO COSC rating is more marketing hype than a true indicator of the potential precision of a mechanical watch. Almost every modern mechanical timepiece can be regulated to run well within COSC spec.

I think it's funny that Breitling's electric/quartz watches are COSC. My son's $15 Timex would meet COSC specifications!

My preference is clearly Omega

We all know that any quartz will beat any mechanical movement regarding accuracy, but what we are talking about here is the superquartz movement which is thermo compensated and variance is rated at +/- 15 seconds in a year.

For a quartz movement to be certified as a chronometer, it should perform no more than a 0.07 second variation in 24 hours, for 11 different tests. That is 2 seconds a month, 25 seconds a year.

RolexNWB,

BTW, keep in mind that it also depends on your preference. It it does not smile at you, no point in acquiring it.

A small percentage of owners with Omegas may also find issues in resizing the bracelet perfect as te Omega Bracelet have no micro adjustments like Rolex and Breitlings, but one forum member did manage to get it right by getting a half link I think.

Omega also uses pins for the links, while Breitling uses screws.

Breitling have double AR coatings on their crystals. If you are not a fan of outer AR coatings, its best you go with an Omega version that has the AR only in the inside. The Planet Ocean series have double AR coating.

One thing that I don't like on a good chunk of Breitling watches are the too polished bracelets and cases. I'm more of a person that likes brushed finished or Ti. Again, its all a matter of personal tastes.

From my experience, Omega and Breitling in terms of resale values are about the same.

As for added value, Omega and send you the official COSC certificate directly from Bien when you contact their support.

Good luck in your quest.

Hi there.

I must say, that from the Omerga TZ forum, many are beginning to have overhauled there Omega Co-axl after 4 - 6 years, because they loose 10 - 30 sec. a day, and a regulation will only help for 6 - 12 mounths. I am affraid, that the Co-axl when it comes to service needs service almost as often as a regular one. Perhpas the change of presion is better.

Regards

Nick

Seamaster v. Breitling?

Its not so much a matter of preference for you, or you would likely not have asked. Even on the Rolex forum, Omega hold their head high. Simply nothing bad to say about Omega and the Seamaster Chrono is tops. Black or blue should be your only dilema...black one do not have a date on the face of the watch and have the sword hands as opposed to the skeleton hands.

Breitlings will be mall watches in five years.

The black ones do have a date.
If they are the 33xx powered ones, the date is at 6 as opposed to the skeleton hands chrono which has date at 3.

And there is no way Breitling will be a mall watch in 5 years. They have way to much history and tradition behind them, and they make a fantastic watch.
I have owned two of them and I was BEYOND impressed with everything that had to do with them. From fit, finish, accuracy, attention to detail, customer care after the sale.

BOTH MALLS had Brietlings.

I'm glad Rolex, JLC etc are not in the Mall next door to the grocery and fashion accessory stores. Yikes!

In US, the malls sell JLC, Patek, Lange, Glashutte, UN, Blancpain.... right next to a coffee shop or a shoe store

When you said "sold at a mall" I was thinking along the lines of a lonely guy in a booth that is about 4 feet by 4 feet selling them.

In US, EVERYTHING is at the mall.
