5296 vs 5227 - 2 Ultimate Classic Dress Calatrava
Both the watch are very similar, except that they 5227 have a hunter Caseback and the 5296 have 1mm smaller size (!?)
I actually prefer the marker on 5296 (don't know why). So which one will you choose between those 2 and why? 5296 G 5227 G P/S: Also the 5296 sector dial is also an option, but I do not like those hand since I think the dauphine hand make Calatrava look like "Calatrava"... and very Dressy |

I would go non-sector 5296 for its classic dial design. The sector dial doesn't work well w the date window IMO and I don't like "triangular" markers, neither on the 5227 nor on many modern JLCs and VCs. In the end I find the 5296 and 5227 very large for basic, empty-dial dress watches and prefer the 3998.

5227 or 5107/5127 if you prefer a smaller dress watch.

5227 all the way for me (especially the R version, which I own). I find the 5296 a little too flat like a pancake and too angular, while the 5227 curves down to fit the wrist better even with the larger 39mm size, plus the scalloped lugs and sloped/curved bezel/case add a lot of character and nuance (reminiscent of the classic 2526). And of course the opening caseback, the ultimate stealth feature, is hard to beat. The 5227 exudes quiet confidence and presence, classic lineage with a modern touch.

I'm a big fan of the 5196 and 5227...
if choosing between 5296 vs 5227, I'd go 5227. |

I have a 5296G and it’s just not possible to get anymore timeless than it. I would also love a 5227 as well, so there’s that.

5227 is the better one for me with the shape of the case and lugs.

It was tough for me to justify the price of a 5227 when you can basically get an Annual Calendar for the same cost

I like the 5196 because it’s thinner and wears comfortably. |

Love my sector 5296g, so versatile. Bit of a strap monster too!

5227 all the way or the 5107 or 5127. The 5296 wears like a 40mm and is off balance with the long lugs. From the photos you can see the 5227 is far more elegant and much less the scratch magnet without the sharp angle edged bezel on the 5296.

I do not even look at the manual chrono much. Someday I will have the solid back put on my 5270.

Two very different watches. The 5227 is a minimalist, bauhaus-like design and beautiful in its own way. The 5296 sector dial was an instant classic and perhaps the most attractive sector dial ever made. Definitely the most attractive in the modern era, especially in white gold. Which one you like is up to your individual taste. One thing for sure - it’s good to have choices like this!

It sort of like a fine sports car with a beautiful motor. As much as the motor is beautiful to look at, I prefer to ride with a solid hood. I know the hood can be opened and the solid case back cannot which is a negative but the added heft and balance offset that issue in my view. Bear in mind clear case backs are relatively new in the watch world which is what 300 years old. The manufacturers love them. They can charge the same or more but use less precious metal. 5227 is the best of both worlds.

I have also thought that the clear case back means less precious metal is used, and thus considered a nice touch from Patek to include the solid case back in the package. I guess it just feels like a "waste" not to be able to admire the beautiful caliber on a PCC. |

Dammit. Every post I read here makes me change my opinion.
I admit I don't really get the sector dial. To me it looks kinda sporty on a very traditional, classic watch.

For me it is the 5227R.
Though I did fit mine to a deployant. It fit fits my wrist perfectly. Previously the 5127 was my favourite. I love the way that the shoulders swoop up and protect the crown. But I do prefer the larger case of the 5227.

The officer's caseback sets it apart from the 5296.
