Yep!

"Rolling Stone" has lost all integrity.

I don't think "Best...of all time" has the same meaning to me as it does to them.

It would be laughable, if it weren't so dishonest.

Time life used to put out a top 100 hits of all time and at the time it was pretty spot on because they used to populate the songs based off of merit and not just the popular vote

It's the Title that's the problem, isn't it.
"The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
It should have been " The songs considered 'greatest' by the 250 music industry people that we surveyed". Doesn't have the same impact however.
I'm not sure "music industry" people are the best people to make this determination.
Sure, they know more about the music industry but like all "experts" they will be full of their own biases and prejudices (and need to be seen as "cool")
No more valid than 250 people straight off the street.
Bit like the book "1001 Albums you must hear before you die". Sez Who!

Everyone knows only about 10% of music is good. But the thing is, no one can agree on what that 10% is.

Aretha Franklin “respect” at number one? Rolling stone is so soft. They know that’s not the song they actually want to pick. That’s an absurd choice for the number one song from a rock magazine.

Fight the Power #2, yeah ok (note I'm a PE fan and bought that album when it was released).

Rolling Stone attempting to become relevant again somehow I guess? Have to put all the social justice songs at the top. Message over music I guess.

Don’t know how they can publish that list and think that anyone will take them seriously.

Whatever shred of credibility the rag had left (if any) is now gone. But, who am I to disagree with the likes of Angelique Kidjo, Zedd, Sam Smith, or Megan Thee Stallion?

Just for everybody's sanity (well, at least my own), here's a link to the 2004 list:

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/m...y-tears-56465/

You're welcome.

not sure the 2004 one is much better? entire top 50 is from the 50s and 60s and has 3 songs from the 80s/90s. not a single michael jackson song either. seems very heavily biased and written by people who grew up in the 50s-70s. this is like a list of the best songs from the 50s/60s and a bit of the 70s

That list, while incredibly short-sighted, is not dripping with political BS.

Yeah, Dylan's there and some other Sixties topical stuff, but not like this year.

Of course, I haven't read anything by Rolling Stone in 50 years, so while I don't really care what they think or print, it is an indicator of the shallow nature of 21st Century culture.

They did something similar recently with their top country songs of all time. Some of the artists listed, while undoubtedly talented, aren’t known for being country singers. Others are talented country artists, but were placed higher than one would expect.

Lol. They should have just put NWAs “Unlove the Police” at number one and be done with it. That’s obviously not a list based upon merit, talent or contribution.

Putting aside the fact that lists are always imperfect and ideological, it just looks like a traditionally rockist magazine is finally trying to be everything to everyone — putting in a few stone-cold classic tracks from outside rock to try to look relevant to younger readers who listen to everything, without genre loyalty.

My biggest gripe is that it didn’t list Sam Cooke’s ‘Cupid’ or ‘You Send Me’, which I think are his best songs. And the fishy timing of putting ‘Respect’ at number one at the same time the movie is out.

I would have to move Superstition and Gimme Shelter up into the top 3 with Respect. Not sure some of those newer songs belong where they have them.
