Bot that I will get much support on this but for me it is:

Rolex - Best made watch I have ever owned.
Casio - everyone Neds a beater.
Seiko - so many people start their collection here.
Timex - or here.
Patek - If I ever drop new car money on a watch it will be the Pope's watch.

Surprised that Tudor isn't showing up more frequently. Going with a bit of a price limitation since the rules do not say unlimited funds my 5 would be:

Tudor
Rolex
Grand Seiko
Casio (G Shock, everyone needs one)
Omega

If you can afford the AP's and PP's and so on.... go for it! Unless I win the lottery those will most likely never be a reality in my world, so must have or not, they aren't happening for me!

Rolex (the king)
Omega
Breitling
Patek
Jaeger-Lecoultre (the reverso is too iconic for JLC not to be included on this list, one of those watches every collector should be in possession of, at some point)

Honorable mention: Vacheron. Beautiful haute horology (the blue dial overseas is something i hope to own one day) but unfortunately, they're nowhere near Patek in terms of value rention, and as much as many folks scoff at such an impure idea as re-sellability (the horror!), at some point you have to be mindful of that aspect when it comes to a purchase, especially if you're buying a piece that's well over $20-30k and you're not fabulously wealthy with "unlimited" funds for watches.

I'm not a person who cares about brands of watches but instead interested in models of those brands.

I've owned lots of models from the popular brands that people have listed but most didn't stick. Lots of great companies are listed but they don't necessarily have any models that I lust after or care about anymore. I now own 10 watches.

So here's my list: If I could only have 5 watches, these would be them.

Ulysse Nardin Freak
Peter Speake-Marin Resilience
Lange & Heyne Georg
Voutilainen 28Sport
Rolex Sea Dweller

Since a year has gone by since my first answer… it’s time for an update:

Rolex, Zenith, AP, Omega, Movado

I do hope to add a Breitling eventually. Tag has fallen way down the list.
