I'm fairly confident working in software it doesn't but honestly... I have a healthy amount of skepticism that I could be wrong. Facebook in particular loves to pay people stupid money to blur their ethics.

Without a doubt they all do. It's been obvious for years now. All hidden on page 999 of the disclosures no one reads. AKA purposely concealed. Should be criminal.

Facebook messenger app also has access to your SMS text conversations and constantly scans all, so that they can sell that info the advertisers at best, foreign adversaries or scam artists at worst.

Are our phones listening to our conversations

Oh yeah. That 100% happens.

Your phone is definitely listening but the really interesting question is did you see the ad because you discussed it or did you discuss it just when the predictive marketing algorithm knew you would?

Google has done a really good job, almost too good a job with their predictive analytics and know when you’re going to want things before you do. And it’s been going on for a while. That is a big part of why Google is such a Goliath.

But our phones are definitely listing in.

And we are going to start monitoring your photos in iCloud.

Ya know since it’s encrypted and 100% impenetrable.

Yup, very private. I complain but guess who just ordered a Pro 13… ya, me. If Tim wants to look at pictures of watches, kids, cats, and whatever nonsense I photograph it’s his time to waste.

On a serious note, if I was retired, I’d ditch the phone forever, move to wherever I could find a few thousand acres and live my life without all this bs.

Question is, does that stop this or is it inevitable as we progress through time?

I’m not retiring till 2044 so at that time I’m sure the facial recognition glasses and everything else will be mainstream not including all the stuff we haven’t even thought of yet.

In 23 yrs does any of us think we will have any semblance of privacy even without a Facebook, smart phone, smart tv and the like?

Google glass part two is making a comeback by somebody, I read. And glasses with cameras where the hinge is.

Just in time to follow you into the washroom or anywhere else and post it online.

Yay, we’re all gonna be influencers 24/7.

Privacy in any form left the building long ago. The only saving grace may be legislated control of the use against you. They’ll have the information they just, in theory, won’t be able to use it in court. Annoying advertising is just……annoying, but police state stuff is very real. But the good news, it’s to keep us safe. Lol

I remember in the 70s when people were outraged that the FBI had a file on some people, they deemed as “subversive”. We were so cute and naive back then.

9/11 brought us a couple of things. Police state surveillance AND massive private security companies that are at the disposal of corporations. Both can know anything and everything about you at a moments notice. The private security companies that were used in Iraq et all are the same ones who do everything all the way down to mall cops.

Their algo isn't that good at understanding multi-factor regression. If it was they wouldn't be using it for search engines and advertisements, they'd be trading. They just happened to be early to the game, and bullied competitors.

Excellent questions!

We already know the answer. The question is, how this (continues to) influence / change humans' life experiences and 'evolutionary' direction.

I had to ask Google to help me out with @904VT's comment.
Multiple linear regression (MLR), also known simply as multiple regression, is a statistical technique that uses several explanatory variables to predict the outcome of a response variable. Multiple regression is an extension of linear (OLS) regression that uses just one explanatory variable.
I assume that that is what you meant.

Of course, I still don't understand it.

I think you're on the right track right there. A number of multiple-factor techniques including MLR, Factor analysis, Cluster analysis among others. Also additional factors can be added. I'm using multi-factor regression analysis broadly to mean any of the above, but can also include multiple linear regression with a time-series analysis and/or seasonality factor, auto-regression etc. Generally speaking algorithms in practice today get much more complicated than being able to put into any single category. Specific to my prior comment, big tech's algo is imo at least is not great on the time-series analysis portion especially. Their business model is mass quantities, basic algos. Today, sometimes you will hear the term, "Deep Learning" used to reference AI driven multi-factor.

Just decided to dump Everything Apple because of these silly T&C’s to still be able to listen to music from Apple Music that I pay $10 a month for.

Which is why 99.99% of people never read them. What’s the point?
