<<< Favourite rock'n roll gigs >>>

We've all been to them ... large productions, smaller festivals, local bar bands, etc.

Live shows are the best: the crowd, the energy, the raw sound, improvisation... it makes us feel alive.

My favourites are smaller shows with tight spaces or outdoor festivals. Something about a “less produced atmosphere” really strikes a chord with me. As long as the bands are rock’n and the music is churning along it”s all good.

Last night my buddies from high school put on an awesome free live show from the back forty of one of our local breweries.

A fun evening had by all, that brought back so many memories. I've known these guys 40 years now ... crazy to think where the time has gone.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.

If you've got some favourite gig shots, large or small, feel free to share them

Nice, Brian.

Can’t say U2 are my personal friends but it was pretty great seeing them a couple of years ago in Berlin playing some songs from Acthung Baby (my favorite show still being U2 in Saratoga, NY in the early ‘90s during the Outdoor Broadcast shows… not really small or intimate of a setting, yet U2 made it feel so personal. I don’t have any pics from that show).

Love it my friend! I’d have to say that as large production type shows go, U2 has it nailed. I’ve been to many of their shows including one in Chicago on my 50th birthday. You’re absolutely right, they do somehow make it feel like an intimate setting

This past Friday we went to see the Black Crowes at Jones Beach, NY. One of our favorite venues, that and MSG. It was my first time seeing the band and was throughly impressed with their live performance. They rocked

I love smaller shows, and I am pretty sure my days of going to baseball/football stadium concerts are over. One of my favorite shows was Grateful Dead at Radio City Music Hall in 1980. Acoustic Ripple!

Good stuff Brian.

I prefer bar gigs for connection and sound, or open festivals for the people watching and debauchery.

Don’t like large super shows. The rules the lousy seating. Ingress and egress and lines of Disneyland and I detest Disneyland.

Just completed 2 gigs [Fri-Sat] at Oktoberfest Zinzinnati this weekend. Always fun to stretch out on a larger stage w/ full sound support.

Thanks to all who appreciate & support live music.

That would’ve been epic I saw the Dead in Buffalo back in the late 80’s (I think it was). It was a stadium show but nevertheless a great performance. Steve Miller opened

I have zero music talent and 100 percent admiration for those who perform live music. My father in law was the frontman for a band for years: I have ingrained in me to not only tip the band/performer but to buy a round of beers on me.

I hope to one day to see on stage a stylish dude on bass rocking a bad ass Tudor. Beers (or bourbon) will be on me!

The music is still great but the groupies tend to look a bit “vintage”, I’m guessing.

Live music is always better, whether at the Hollywood Bowl or the Grand Ole Opry.

A couple of years ago we went to a major rodeo in Austin, Texas, and Flo-Rida was the musical entertainment. His big hit was “Low.” We aren’t fans of him or of his genre, but to his credit (and to our surprise) he played the heck out of his set, pulling people out of the audience, driving around in a truck, etc. He was clearly having fun, and he made it a great experience

Stones. No matter the venue, always a true “show.” Recently purchased this photograph from Mark Seliger, who was head photographer at Rolling Stones for 10+ years. Rough image taken when first opened. Cant wait to get it framed and hung. Takes me back to those great events.

You're on! I usually enjoy some [just one] of Kentucky's finest on the rocks while performing. We were scheduled to play a festival in the Blue Ridge Mountains this weekend, but it was cancelled due to COVID. At least that would have been shorter drive.

Agreed! Got to see some historic Stones concerts over the years. Got tickets for Nashville in Oct but the COVID numbers scare the snot out of me, especially hanging w/ 60K screaming fans.

The best "small venue" concert I've seen was Yngwie Malmsteen at House Of Blues in Orlando back in the early 2000s. It was also my son's first concert. We were maybe 10 feet from the stage. For sheer guitar wizardry, he was amazing.

Brian, great thread!

Can’t seem to find old pictures but some of my favorites are from the whispering beard folk festival. Saw Tyler Childers play in front of maybe 50 people one year. Willy Tea Taylor always was a favorite. The bluegrass scene in the Cincinnati area is pretty killer if you like that genre. Not much of a music scene where I am at now.

For me it was Stiff Little Fingers in Atlanta at a 1000 capacity club. They were my FAVORITE band in high school and I got drunk the night before they came to my area in Jersey and my parents wouldn’t let me go see them play. Had to wait 20 years lol

Very nice Brian!

I too enjoy live music. An obscure alternative rock band and one that I make the effort to go to whenever they’re in town or performing in LA is Coheed and Cambria.

The atmosphere is very different at live music venues when you’re surrounded by other fans who know every song from the first album to the last.

For smaller venue, nothing beats the Troubadour on Sunset Strip in Hollywood. Saw many great bands there before they hit the big time (Motley Crue, Guns n Roses, Metallica, etc). The atmosphere there is electrifying.
