All Rolex watches are tougher than their owners so "tool watch" only applies to the owners romantic dream of their equipment.
There is nothing wrong with a Sub XL as larger guys wanted a 42mm dive watch. The TT SD43 just gives them more options. Gold doesn't take away any of its toughness. Gold is actually more inert than SS. This forum walks around with SS blinders on. If Rolex really knows what they are doing, then they also have confirmed that TT watches are the future and on the rise. You dont have to read the tea leaves too close to know the SS fashion wasnt gonna last forever. Economy is good and the use of more PM is showing it.
I think you're right, from Rolex's perspective to the masses, this is just a Sub XL. And if its just a Sub XL, then why not put a little glitter into it? But from my perspective, a typical WIS, the SD was always the more expensive low production serious tool watch special version SS dive watch that only the few who were "in on it" purchased. Everyone else just got a Sub.

I see it more like only few that fell for it rather than the few who were in on it. Have yet to be convinced that a diving scenario exists that a regular sub could not handle?

They should make a Full gold SD43. Then we can talk about a bad ass watch with serious wrist presence.

I'm a SD fan, currently own 3 SDs from different eras, would definitely consider it.

How would this destroy the DSSD? Im serious.

As long as they make a DSSD in steel you get the watch you want.

Ceramic Daytona owners dont care about rainbow Daytona owners.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with it. I like it for Rolex but not for myself. Im sure it has tremendous wrist presence. Now if they came out with it in blue, that would be tempting.

It’s designed as a tool watch. IMO, it takes away from the concept. I also don’t like that they did it to the SD43. Again. It’s my opinion, but to each his own.

As a professional diver working on oil rigs, I can finally match my gold chain and tooth with a watch that can go to that depth. Decompression has just been taken to another level.

I think it looks good. The only downside I can think of is making it a much heavier watch.

Rolex has had gold in sports models for like 50 years.... Let’s relax, folks.

Looks pretty sharp to me. And the YG in the bezel insert looks more “gold” than “yellow” (a problem, IMO, with the Sub, GMT and ceramic Daytona), so I think that’s an improvement.

It’s gold deposited via a PVD process. It looks (to my eye) like they improved the process with better color rendering. I could be wrong and it’s all the same....

If the conclusion is that Rolex stopped being a serious watchmaker because it put gold in the SD, it was never serious. The next picture is not a modern watch (very ugly buy the way) :

That's a cool watch,
Yeah sure a gold watch would work in Antarctica. Most watches would!

Seeing how the closest to scuba diving 95% of these watches will go is scoping a dead fish from an aquarium. As far as Rolex is concerned why not make the watch.

I already have the 126600 and the blue/gold 116613LB if opting for a2 tone. This reference is pass for me!
