My AD Called This Morning About A Sub

I had just sat down for breakfast at the local donut shop when the iPhone buzzed to life. I recognized the number. My goodness it was the AD! This was it! My fingers began to tingle with adrenaline. I took an emergency sip of coffee and cleared my throat. “Hello? This is SoTaxLaw.” “Good Morning So. This is Donna from [the AD]. I have great news for you.”

The donut shop lady came around with a bin picking up dishes with a clubbed hand. Some of the dishes were rattling. I gripped the iPhone tightly to block the noise. I only wanted to hear Donna’s voice—it was mixed with southern charm, hope, news about Rolex and all sorts of wonderful things you hear in your heart. “SoTaxLaw, I spoke with the owner about what we discussed....”

I knew it. Chatting up Donna every visit was now going to pay off. Donna understood everything, especially how much I wanted a 114060. Working together, Donna and I could achieve anything. I was going to be taking my Sub on my vacation to Australia this year. The donut shop lady began mopping up the adjacent table with a thick rag. It made swoosh swoosh noises. I tried to focus on Donna.

“Well the owner agreed to sell you a Submariner.” My heart began to race. “Thank you Donna. That’s why I...” “I put you on the list.”

“Something didn’t, I wasn’t sure what you just said Donna. I’m at a restaurant. Could you...” Donna began to explain the list to me. It’s what I had read about on the forums. “A paid order often comes in sooner.” The donut lady frowned and walked back to the kitchen with her wares. The adjacent table gleaned with its wetness, ready to greet the next newcomers and their as yet uncertain outcome. “Um okay Donna. I have time next week. I’ll stop in.”

I looked down at my 114300 and saw my reflection in the bezel. What just happened to that guy? I saw nearly the same reflection in the donut shop spoon and the shop window. That guy is not James Bond, I thought and laughed to myself. It then struck me that the struggle and the hunt are part of what makes this new hobby exciting. The failed James Bond then went out the back door to fetch his Toyota.

Congrats! On the hand, this reminds me just 2 years ago, I often saw the sub regularly being on the store display, now it needs to be approved by owner to be sold to the lucky buyer, Rolex has gone along way!

Yeah, well, no James Bond’s we are, depending on Donna and The Owner‘s of this world.

Go buy a 14060, nicer piece anyway ;)

Sad state of affairs.

Ha. Good read. If we are to look for a silver lining in this supply mess, we've been seeing some creative posts lately. Good luck with the sub, OP. Hope you get it soon.

Fantastic write-up

These lines are sad beyond words

“A paid order often comes in sooner” and...
“The owner has agreed to sell you a submariner..”

I'm confused. They didn't sell you a watch but instead gave you permission to buy it if you prepay? And, they don't yet have the watch in stock?

I suppose congrats are in order... eventually. Hopefully the wait isn't long. ADs shouldn't be asking for payments up front, however, so be careful with that.

Reminds me of my 114060 journey and my luck of finding a Submariner no date at an AD on display (NOV 2015) and getting it for less than MSRP ($6900). Now they don't display any SS sport watches and they put you on the mythical list while they supply hot models to grey market and rich customer's that buy precious metal Rolex's in order to buy SS sports watch. Good luck with getting 144060, I truly love mine.

Hey Sparty! I might end up going that way. I’m going to visit the AD again and see if I really need to prepay. I’m not keen on this policy at all.

They’re saying I can be on the list for whatever that means. But they’re also saying they will place a customer order with a deposit. They’re saying that takes less time. Not sure what to think. My feeling is I’m better off to discuss with the AD in person.

Definitely discuss it in person. Having to get on a list and make a deposit for a 114060 Sub is nutty. Donna might be a nice lady but you shouldn't need to jump through hoops to get this watch.

Are there any other ADs in your area? It would be worth shopping around.

Agreed. There are even a few reports here about 114060s sitting in cases. I got a 116610LN in 2 weeks with no prior purchase history. Did take a fair amount of charm and sweet talking. Wearing my 16250 didn't hurt either.

You’ve got a good memory. Last month (?) I started with my interest in the no date Sub to create some commentary on the then state of the forums.

Congrats on your soon to have Sub.

“The List” is something I can see being on a Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm episode.

A breakfast intrusion of this sort would not be well-received. A good donut, however, . . . .

Hahaha. Somewhat similar. No wonder my student was laughing upon seeing me drive off with my Toyota. With a Rolex on my wrist he was probably expecting I was driving a Mercedes...
