1680 red sub with service case
Hello guys !!
I have the opportunity to get a red 1680, but the things is that it has a service case. How much does it affect the resale value. Could i sell it around 8k ? Here is some pics Regards |

I would take this question to the vintage Rolex sub forum. Not that you won't get answers here, but there you'll get them from the vintage crowd.

Hands looks a bit light too. I am not sure there are that many sales data points for re-cased Red 1680's. Knowing the collectors mind set I would have thought quite a hefty discount would apply.

Just noticed that the insert is a service item too. Can't tell if the date wheel is original, so what's left just the movement and dial being original?

Crown also changed. Looks like a 703 to me. Bezel ring is probably a replacement as well. It looks quite sharp.
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume the bracelet is also a replacement. (Then I notice it is called out in the document) Dial looks OK, and it runs, so it should be handled as a "sum of parts" value situation. Dial value: a few thousand Movement value: a few thousand Case value: 1500-2000 Bracelet: 800 (if near new condition) Can it be re-sold for 8,000? Probably not to a well educated buyer. I would expect closer to 5 or 6 because it does not have a lot of originality. The individual parts do have value on the open market however, and I think "parted out" you could get 8,000 out of it, or at least close to that. |

Value is in the dial for a collector. Pull dial, add service dial to it and sell. Find correct case year and add dial :-) But only if can be bought at a proper price.

A dial for a red 1680 is indeed where the money is, as stated above, and is the most difficult part to find. However, I would not part this watch out if it were mine. The case is not "incorrect" just because it's a Rolex service case. Nothing wrong with it. I love a fat case, service or not (as long as the price is adjusted accordingly, of course).
I'd track down a set of tritium hands and a proper insert and enjoy the watch. It's also got RSC service papers, which add value, and presumably the movement is good to go for years. Is $8K too much? Probably. See if you can bargain down some. Good luck. |

Both examples are worth passing on IMO. Wait for a better, original example from a respected seller is my best advice. Happy hunting!
