Folks on their Phone

Curious as to what you think common sense protocol is.

Had a nice hike this am with a buddy. I then went solo to my neighborhood bagel joint for some breakfast. Nice chill place.

I’m the only patron besides one small family. Kids is watching a movie. No headphones. Dad is scrolling.

Mom is doing a FaceTime. Full on conversation with someone. Loud. For the entire meal. I wanted to politely ask her to pick up her phone. I did not for fear of the typical defensive response that appears more common than not. I’d like to avoid conflict.

I’m not a fan of what dad and kid are doing. But that appears typical today.

I’ve seen others with full on FaceTime conversations before. Always annoyed the crap out of me. Busy or quiet place, I think it’s wrong. Talk on the phone. Okay. Don’t love it. I always walk away to avoid disturbing others. But this FaceTime phenomenon?

Too far? Or typical? Non issue for you?

I despise FaceTime. Usually will decline any requests for one. I don’t particularly care for zoom either though.

No one cares about anyone but themselves these days. I get looked at funny if my phone rings with an important cal and I excuse myself from the table.

Major social disconnect nowadays. All interaction needs to be done through some sort of device. Instead of a family of 4 having pizza and conversations, I have witnessed the entire family nostril deep in their phones (during the entire wait). I sincerely hope they were in a group chat together or something because they could not have been more disinterested in each other by body language.

All three were in the wrong. Sound awful.

Maybe next time ask the waitress to ask them to turn things down?

Phones at breakfast, lunch and dinner, no matter if you're at home or eating out is a no go in this family.

Also, loud phone calls or facetime in public also a big nono.

It's tough to police it as a patron if management sees nothing wrong with it. I would tell management as I left that it impacted my perception of whether I would want to visit them again. I would avoid direct discussion with the table.

Two different people on FaceTime in the grocery store today. Super annoying. I was thinking the same thing, “when did this become okay?”

Sound coming out of someone’s device in public is a no-go for me.

What's the difference if it's FaceTime or in person?

You can't control people in a public place.

People talk louder when they face time . This happened to me yesterday at a restaurant, I have to say I found it very rude and inconsiderate.

Exactly why I’m conflicted.

I thought the exact same thing.

It’s rude. I hate it. Next time start participating in her conversation. They love that.

It's the new norm, the only person one is worried about is themselves. I was recently eating in a restaurant and a guy in a nearby booth was watching a movie on his phone at what seemed to be max volume. I just couldn't imagine doing this; I guess I'm just old school and don't want to embarrass myself or disturb others......and God forbid you politely inform these people they are disturbing others, you'll make the evening news.

As far as Facetime, never done it, never will. Just another thing I can't understand the joy of.

Exactly this and it’s getting worse.

Seth, I’ve had this happen more than I care to remember. I take myself out of the situation if it’s at all doable.

I am very irate when it is that bad....try doing this next time Seth. I simply join in the conversation with them, which usually shocks them and they get up and leave or they ask to mind my own business which I simply tell them I am. Believe me, many people around have a good laugh at them.

Yes. And you can’t say anything because then you are the bad guy.

Most people are so anxious these days they prefer to interact via a device instead of in person. It’s shocking to me and troubling about what the future holds for my children and future generations.

But, but, but….don’t interfere with my freedoms.

I remember when I was a kid and a parent was called to the phone, (the wall phone, the only one in the house) and it was announced Dad, it’s long distance…..And he’d be yelling into the phone as if the distance changed the volume.

That’s how some people treat their cell phones. Especially FaceTime.

Dude, use your inside voice.

I politely reminded a young lady on my train that she wasn’t in her own living room last week. She looked at me like I was the lunatic.

Almost got into a fight at an very nice restaurant here in SD, couple in booth next to us were watching a concert and it wasnt on volume #1or2.. Being the gentleman, I addressed the man and he told me to mind my biz.. I responded your concert is in my business.

Crazy thing is folks were looking around and the staff just stood there like bumps on logs! They requested a different table and were moved..

Back on topic, what with folks walking and texting , and walking into traffic..Nuts

I visit my local coffee shop almost every day. There is one incredibly rude woman there that yells in to her phone on speaker the entire time she’s there. Now, when us regulars see her coming we all move as if she had the plague. It’s rude and obnoxious.

The girlfriend and I decided a long time ago, when we go out to dinner... the phones stay in the car. It was amazing, we were in a nice Italian restaurant and looked around, not a single person was talking with the other people at their table. Everyone sat with their faces in their phones. Sad really.

I agree it’s sad. I have seen couples, entire families out and no one is talking to anyone else. Is this what our society has come to?

Hmmmmmm...Where do I start??? Phones ringing in the middle of a sermon in Church??? Parents at baseball or soccer games who have their noses buried in their phones not paying any attention to their kid's game?? Entire families at a restaurant not conversing with eachother??? Why even bring your phone to dinner???Do you really think you're that important??? Surely the world will continue revolving without your input for an hour. I've been to wedding receptions where the entire table were on their phones either talking or checking messages. If you have kids at home and need to check with the sitter, I get it..Excuse yourself and call home for a minute. People really have an inflated opinion of their importance.

Agree with 90% of what ya said.. I have to bring my phone as I can be called back into work or my Chiefs needs to get ahold of me. If it vibrates, I simply set outside and answer it!

Folks on their Phone

When the blackberry and subsequently iPhones first came out I said “nothing is important enough to need that”. Still believe it.
